Is the income cap for singles still at $75,000?

Yes, if you make $75k and are single you dont need it

This is very dangerous thinking. Very dangerous. "here, you don't need that, i'll just take some more and give to people that don't work."

No, this is pure BULLSHIT thinking. I pay more taxes, so other people can get the "benefits"? (Well, that's one very short sighted way to look at it).

I just saw an article on the Consumerist about a tax credit for low-income people who contribute to their retirement funds (IRA, 401k).

http://consumerist.com/350425/...-for-tax-savers-credit

If you earned less than $15.5k (double for couples), you can get a credit for 50% of contributions to your retirement account of up to $2,000 (so a $1,000 tax credit). What's great is that it's a credit and not a deduction, so it's basically money in your pocket. If you make more than $15.5k, but less than $26k, you can still get a credit but it phases out pretty rapidly.

I'm going to amend my tax return for 2006, so I should be getting an extra $1000 back from the IRS.

Great, so you didn't pay any taxes and you get free money.
