Will I notice a difference?

Howdy,

I'm looking for some advice before I finally purchase a new system from newegg. I haven't upgraded for a long time and am wondering if its worth spending the $1000...I don't want to waste money and need a comp that will last for another solid three years.

I play games CASUALLY, do a lot of video and sound editing and a lot of multitasking...here are the specs of my proposed new system vs. my old....my main question is will I notice a BIG difference with this upgrade or should I wait till I have more money to upgrade to something higher end.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Old System:

AMD opteron 144 @ 2.5 Ghz
2GB Ram
ATI x800 GTO

New Build:

Intel q9550
Asus P5Q (no plans on using crossfire so only need one PCI slot)
4GB DDR2 6400 (mushkin)
Radeon HD 4830 (Visiontek)
WD 640GB
new case / psu pontially (I have a 430W in my old case but that might not be enough)

I could also just do small upgrade on my current rig -- although I'm not sure the state of processors for socket 939 motherboards...

Yes. Very much so, in video editing especially. If you mean to buy the 4850 (your post says 4830) then that'll be a big jump up from the X800 GTO in newer games like TF2 or COD4 or Crysis.

I'd upgrade the PSU if you're getting an AMD 4850 graphics card.

BIG BIG improvement, maybe not in day to day tasks like surfing or writing an email, but when encoding, you could keep using your rig, without it losing much if any of it's responsiveness, and encoding will take like 1/6th the time if not less!!! Videocard is from another universe as well. It's really time for an upgrade, and I bet it will last you three years.

You definitely will notice a big difference. Go for it! The economy needs your $$$.
