also, i wouldn't list IM sports as they aren't a real "varsity" sport that they're looking for. as a former varsity athelete, i'd get mad if someone who played basketball on their lunch hour was given as much attention as the hours i spent after school playing sports and then going to away matches and still keeping up the gpa.

your SAT score is nice, your GPA is a tad low. go get the US news college rankings and see how first your numbers stack up. if you were hoping to get in on a comprehensive review, i don't know if you have enough (i.e. you didn't list leadership positions, club membership outside of chess club, etc.)

if your community service is someplace significant (i.e. i want to be a doctor and i candy striped at a local hospital) that's a better mention than "30 hours of community service."

and write a kick ass admissions essay. nyu is private, so get good recs.

Nah, if he was in intramural sports then he should put them on his application. They might not look as "good" as actual varsity sports, but they still make a person seem well-rounded, and they show that he wasn't completely wasting all of his free time.

Saw that and immediately thought it was a court mandated sentence. Chalk it up to Monday morning.

A wrestling fan and not too quick on the uptake, what do you have going for you?

um, I'm just confused where the wrestling quote came from.

and I quoted the varsity chess, because it is beyond me why you would state that being a varsity chess player would help you to gain admission into NYU.

I just love how high school students do community service for the sole purpose of putting it on their college applications. I'd be surprised if the admissions people don't see right through that.

I was required to do 40 hours in hs (I think they won't let you participate in graduation if you don't)

i think ur credentials are fine.

the things ur mentioning sound great. As weird as varsity chess does sound, it definitely adds another facet to your profile that makes you more interesting.

and NYU is definitely not worth the money they charge.

well... it depends on what you're going there for.

for undergrad, they have a good business and a good theatre program.

if you're going there for anything else, i'd say concentrate on other schools like Columbia, where your 40 grand a year actually means something.

NYU is great for graduate work, so definitely consider them when that time comes around.

you'll get in. but I don't know if you'll get into Stern or Arts and Sciences. depends on who else is applying that year.

Don't listen to these guys. Their undergrad business program is the best in the area and their arts programs are really competitive.

Columbia is a better school though, but the area it is in isn't that great. Their Econ department is one of the best in the country. I would even say top 3.

If it matters any, the chicks at NYU are hotter.

I just graduated NYU undergrad. I got into NYU CAS with much crappier SAT scores and next to no community service. But then again, this was four years ago. NYU is now a lot pickier.

I say there's a good chance you'll get into CAS and an adequate chance (50/50?) to get into Stern. Unless they give you a scholarship/grant or you're well-off, I'm not so sure NYU is really worth it. NYU CAS has a fairly strong Politics and strengthening Econ department, but it still has a very lacking CS department (mostly due to lack of funding, I'm sure). And since I come from NYU CAS, I naturally have to speak against NYU Stern. I find many Stern kids are stuck-up. In any case, almost all the CS and Stern students I know have jobs lined up immediately after college.

But I'd agree with what (some) others have said. Even though I think NYU is great, I'd jump on Columbia University in a heartbeat if I could get the same offer I got from NYU. NYU is excellent for graduate work in all the fields I've mentioned above though.

Oh yeah, the NYU girls are pretty hot.
