time to get a dslr, it seems... the amazon price for a xsi with 2 lenses is only $780, and i'm just wondering if i'd really know the difference/be able to really take better pics with the d90...

a) the wife will be using the thing most of the time, and she's a point and shoot kind of gal
b) i'm the same because i'm kind of lazy... ;0

the canon seems like a screaming deal...

some of the features of the d90 seem pretty cool, i just wonder if i would ever take advantage of them...

IQ wise I don't think it'll matter. What you need to consider is the lens system, ergonomics, and UI. the D90 IMO is leaps and bounds better in the ergonomics department over the XSi. But I am partial to the Canon used market for now, and the controls (tho, I have the xxD series). Movie mode on the D90 is also just fun to mess with, but I honestly wouldn't make that a significant factor in purchasing.

Go to the store, try em out. Pick which one you feel more comfortable with.

Having owned an XTi and used a D80 extensively in the past, I can say that the Nikon definitely has much better ergonomics and feels much more natural in your hand. The D90 will be pretty much the same as the XSI in terms of image quality...maybe a teeny bit better at high ISOs, but probably not enough to be noticeable.

The D90 does offer features like a top LCD, a larger pentaprism viewfinder with .94x magnification (compared to the XSI's pentamirror with .87x), faster continuous shooting (4.5 vs 3.5 FPS), HD movie mode. If you think these are important to you, then you may want to pay the premium. Otherwise, the XSI will be very similar in terms of picture quality.

I like the Nikon ergonomics in general better than Canon ergonomics.
That said, I have an XTi.

I initially bought a D40 and loved the ergonomics and the P&S picture quality.
But then I ran across a deal on Craigslist that I couldn't ignore. It was an XTi, a bunch of extras, camera bag, 30 gig harddrive, all for $480.
So I returned the D40 and went with the XTi.
I got used to it, but the Nikon handled and felt better.

I guess it comes with the 18-55mm IS kit lens, but what's the other lens?

That's an amazing deal then.

I bought the XSi kit when it first came out. I believe the MSRP was $899, but I had a 12% coupon at best buy so sended up getting it for 860-870 after tax. I have bought the f/1.8 50mm and the 55-250mm IS lens. I paid around $275 for the 55-250mm IS lens so to me that is an incredible deal.

Here are some pics with two lenses included... they are not photoshopped but are shrunk down for picassa.

IMO, yes. I'm holding an XSi right now and I prefer my D40. I will second what everyone says about the ergonomics. The Canon just doesn't feel right. Everything feels cramped and misplaced. I'm sure it will take great pictures, though.

Will you be disappointed in the XSI? No, I doubt you will - especially coming from a non-SLR background. "Feel" is very subjective and depends on the user and what the user may be used to. For example, JDub's comment above indicates he's a Nikon shooter and familiar with the Nikon layout. Given any Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, I'm sure he'd have similar gripes about button placement and feel. Having an XTI for a while now, I have no clue how to use my friend's D40 and other SLRs "feel" too bulky to me. Given two weeks or so, I'd probably get used to it.

OP- No you won't notice the difference. Some would, but not you. It's your first DSLR.

I will get canon's system just for the used market. but no way I am going back to the ###D series, it's just too damn small to comfortably hold. (though I haven't tried the grip, but then that added weight defeats the purpose of getting a xxxD)

Nikon and Canon both have equivalent used lens markets.

Or you could, since the xsi and D90 aren't in the same league.

Excerpts from DPReview's review of the D90 (since I don't have access to an XSi to compare against)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page27.asp
JPEG output is almost identical, except for a slightly less sharpened D90 image.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page31.asp
RAW output is virtually identical, except that the D90 has a slightly stronger anti-aliasing filter. Thus the XSi captures slightly more edge detail, at the cost of slightly more moire.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page34.asp
White balance not withstanding, at ISO 1600 the output also has very little difference between the two.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page35.asp
Resolutions are equivalent, although the 450D is affected by moire, while the D90 is not.

Couldn't tell you, not even going to try. Same way you couldn't if I put pics of a D90 and Hasselblad H3DII-39 into jpgs and posted them to read on the internet. Are they in the same league?

excuses excuses. you claimed they weren't in the same league in IQ, and now you can't back up your claim.

LOL! That's cool, if that's way you decide IQ. Whatever floats your boat.

you mean, looking at images isn't how you determine image quality?

samples have been posted and you refuse to back up your claim that the IQ of the d90 and xsi aren't in the same league. why? you can't tell the difference and you won't admit it.
