CPU- P4 3.0E HT
RAM- 512mb
VC- eVGA 6600GT 128mb agp (was Radeon 9200)
PSU- Antec SmartPower 500w (was Rosewill 400w)

According to a benchmark site it will, just wanna double check.

Anyone with a simular system that plays this game?

Thanks Guys

You should be able to yeah.

I used to play HL2 on max (but with no AA or AF) on my old P4-2.53, 1GB, 9800Pro, and it was fine apart from slowdown when the physics got nuts (which was just the limitation of the cpu, it happened no matter what the graphics settings were).

It did suffer a bit from stuttering though...

Yeah, you will be able to play smoothly at 1024x768 but not with AA and you will probably wanna turn down some settings to make it run smoother. This game runs best with 1GB or more of RAM although 512mb is enough... your load times will take a while.

Just a guess on my part but probably a 7800GT or a X1800XT as the AA goes up to 6x in the game settings. AA is a smoothness crippler unless you have a really buff card.

Then how is it THIS BENCHMARK SITE has it listed as playing that game @ 1024x768 with all "eye candy" on with 90 FPS?

HELP!

they use amd64 4000+, probably that's why

Even then, shouldn't I see an average of atleast 60 FPS?

If 60 FPS is what a P4 3.0E HT CPU can do, then wouldn't that be "butter smooth"?

Half Life 2 isn't very demanding. No need for a very high end card to play it at max settings @ 1024*768. The engine was designed to be scalable so you should be able to play at full setting except you might have to put textures on "medium" since like Crazyfool said, it needs 1024mb of RAM to run properly at high.

Oh and nVidia cards can do 8X AA, which looks slightly better than 6x AA but takes a larger performance hit.

Ok, so add another 2 sticks of 256mb RAM to my specs above. Will I then be able to run the game at maxed out everything?

Probably, except you might have to run at 4X AA since 8X AA is too much of a performance hit for the 6600gt. You might be able to, if you're lucky though. Everything else should be maxed out though. You might get stuttering but that's an engine fault.

You'll be able to run 4X AA and 16AF with that card easily. It isn't the "MAX" aa, but thas pretty dam close and anything over 4XAA isn't as noticable than the jump from 0 to 4.
Just get 1GB ram.

Balony. You guys are forgetting how well programmed the source engine is. In fact, the developers who built the engine all had 9800 pros in their machines and based the whole engine around its capabilities.

An Athlon 64 2800+ with 1GB of ram and a 9800 pro will run it at 1024X768 with 6XAA and 16XAF with all max settings and never ever drop below 40FPS in any circumstance. (A 9600 pro will run 1024 max with no aa/af and still pull 70fps)

A 6600GT should be able to do that, but I am thinking the severely crippling 128 bit memory bus of the 6600gt may limit its performance a bit.

aye. mem bandwidth is very important to AA performance, but still should be able to run 4x AA easily.

You wont be able to play at 1024 with max settings, you gonna need at least a 6800 gt/s and your going to get stuttering because of 512 mb of ram.

my 9800 pro @ 450/400 pulls max settings at 10x7 pretty easily. with a GB of RAM you should be able to stay north of 40 fps pretty much constantly.

The amount of ram you have is going to limit you more htan the cpu.

My Specs
eVGA 6800nu 16/6 @350
Amd 64 3000+ s754 newcastle
512mb Corsair VS

HL2 Settings
Resolution: 1024 x 768
Model detail: High
Texture detail: High
Shader detail: High
Water Detail: Reflect All
Shadow Detail: High
Antialiasing mode: 6x
Filtering mode: Anisotropic 16x
Wait for vertical sync: Disabled
High Dynamic Range: None

I get 40-90 fps (+stuttering due to ram) on the water hazard level outdoors. I hardly think that his system will get the target butter smooth 60 fps .

I played HL2 on a 9800p and a AXP, and at 1024 with 4xAA/8xAF it ran everything smooth, 60+ fps on average. HL2 is not very demanding for modern systems, and a 6600gt should run it smoothly also.

From my experience, you will get stuttering pretty much no matter what you own. I got stuttering on my P4 3.4/1GB/6800GT rig, and I get stuttering with my current rig. It's a known issue with HL2, and one that doesn't seem to have a "throw more hardware at it" fix. Some people never get the stuttering, and those that do can't seem to get rid of it. Not sure why this is, but it is kind of a shame because HL2 is one of the best games out there IMO.

How can it be game of the year if you can't play it smoothly? I have seen conflicting opinions and has me even more confused! I want to be able to play this game smooth, but from what you guys say, its a hit and miss type thing. Does the stuttering make that big of an impact on the game?

if you wanna play HL2 and its mods with good fps, the answer is AMD FX57 forget about what vid card to use even an average vid card will work great with a top of the line cpu like that. or heres another solution, don't play hl2,

Me? I've been a WWII DOD junkie for the last 3 4 yrs and now with DODS i feel what its like to play at 17fps. A more notable point is the fact that when in multiplayer scenarios I get the LOW fps. As an example, when on Bleakhill for source, i get no lower then 60fps on that sludgy part of the axis hill when im alone on the server, when the server is full, same spot i get 30's

I noticed stuttering on my x1800xt when I turn on 6xAAA and 16HQ AF with AI at advanced. It's actually in CS:S. The model movement stutters. The guys skip around the nades seems to trail. What's weird is that the FPS stay high. At 4x AAA, this seems to go away but the FPS is around the same.

In BF2, no such isses.

i could run hl2 1600x1200, all settings on high with my 6600gt, and a 2.7ghz a64. it was just a little low fps, so i turned things down a bit. you should easily be able to run those settings.
