Will I be able to drop my new E4300 in my mobo without having to reinstall windows?

I currently have a P4 560 w/HT (3.6 GHZ) and I'm running Windows XP MCE 2005.

I already have the multiprocessor HAL installed because of the hyper-threading. Will I be able to just "drop" in the E4300 and expect everything to work perfectly?

My board just got a bios update, so I'm stoked to run this bad boy with little difficulty.


Edit: Also, can I set the fsb to 9x266 without having to up voltage or run any stability tests? I have ddr2-533 is why I ask.
 
It should work, after all a mobo change alters much of the hardware that windows has used to generate it's activation, a CPU change is only one piece of hardware....
 
Does the BIOS update specifically list Core 2 Duo support as one of the things it adds/fixes? If so, then yes.. you shouldn't have a problem. If you do have a problem, though, it will be on the motherboard level.. not with Windows.

I wouldn't bet on that... An E4300 is equiv to a P4 in the 3.6 range....(3.3-3.6) in single threadded apps. In multi-threaded apps, it will kill it at stock.

Yeah, sorry about that. You'll be losing performance, unless you don't overclock, in single-threaded apps, which accounts for roughly 99.5-99.6% of all available apps. Of course, if you have some SMP-enabled apps to use, the E4300 will kill a 3.6 Ghz P4, even at stock clocks. And hey, I never said he'd be losing assloads of performance, just that he'd be spending money, and losing performance. Overclock that E4300 to even 2.1 or 2.2 Ghz, and you'll no longer be behing in single-threaded performance.
 
Well, now that you mention it, there's at least one regular member of this very forum that's running an E6300 at stock clocks. That's why I used the words "unless you plan on".😉
 
I think a e4300 at 2.4 can beat a 3.6 netbust single core in everyday work since I do find myself open browser, word, background virus scanner always ticking, firewalls always running all same time. But if you do single threaded game thae result might be close one since most of them is single core games.
 
I'm using my E6300 at stock speeds.. and I couldn't be happier with it. I have no intention to overclock. This isn't an "overclockers only" forum, contrary to popular belief.
