My system is an i7 4790k, 16gb ram, AMD r290x. I have been thinking about 4k gaming as 4k monitors are starting at the 300 dollar mark. Do I NEED to add another r290? My mobo can have 3 video cards, but if I can get by with the one....

Depends on the games and settings, I would say having more GPU power would be advisable. You could just wait for the upcoming cards of course.

The answer is yes.

Just at normal/medium settings for everything, but luckily, the R290X has enough vram and a high bandwidth to handle maxed textures.

In the end, your game will still look great but it will run quite well.

Depends on the game. Some games are unplayable even low settings with a GTX 980 Ti which is much faster than what you have.

There's no "R290X", it's R9 290X.

Personally I wouldn't game on 4K for at least another 1-2 years.

You will definitely be gimping along. Some past titles are easy like any codemasters racing game. Current and new releases, not so lucky overall.

I've ran r9-290 crossfire and gamed at 4k.

Some games are fine while some could be better (Witcher 3). I did not run any AA (not needed at this resolution) and most settings at Very High - High.

Will it be 60 fps constant? Depends on the game but then again, I am not too picky with FPS.

Now that Nvidia's GTX 1080 has been announced, wait a little longer to see what AMD has in it's basket for Polaris.

You can always get a 4k monitor now and try it out.

I've settled on 2560 x 1440 on one rig and have an ultrwide 3440 x 1440 on the other and love them both.

Pretty much this, since most games don't scale the UI very well for 4k displays, and you end up playing them at a lower resolution on a 4k monitor, and it looks all blocky.

If you insist on 4K gaming, then it makes no sense to get another 290, unless you can find it really, really cheap.
With the new cards coming from both nvidia & AMD, it is just better to wait a few weeks, and see how performance turns out to be.

Also, as was already mentioned, crossfire/SLI isn't automatic for most games, and you won't really see double the performance. With DX12, this could change, but, you need to wait for DX12 games to take full advantage of multi GPUs in a system.

I would definitely game at 4K OP. People eare doing it now, and I fiddled with my settings in games that have resolution scale to see if I could get to 4K? I can, and the resolution increase offsets the silly shadow detail scaler I turn down or something else s mall.

It just requires more work on settings than just ULTRA settings 1080/1440p.
