Will humans *ever* colonize another star system?

This is something I was thinking about today when I was stuck in traffic. So in the past century, we spent 70 years going from flying twenty feet a few feet off the ground to landing on the moon, 200K miles away. And in 35 years since, we have done nothing. And it doesn't look like we will for at least another 15 years. We have made no advacements since the 70s in terms of propulsion that can be used in space, and we haven't proven that speed of light is anything except an unbreakable constant that is far too slow as a universal speed limit.

Are we doomed to the inner parts of this solar system until something destroys us from the inside, religious fundamentalism perhaps? Or will we advance far enough to move into deep space at some time in the future?

Looks like someone forgot that we currently have two "rovers" on Mars at this very moment.

When we have depleted the resources on this planet we will move to the next. Isn't that what happened to Mars?

We already have. You just don't know it yet. SG teams have scouted out worlds to colonize that are safe from the Goa'uld and Jaffa threat, and have set up colonies.

Religious fundamentalism is going to kill us? Right.

I think they're currently working on an idea. They're planning on sending up 3 huge spaceships to colonize another planet. I'll bet your name is among those listed for the first spaceship. Don't worry... even if you don't hear from the rest of us for a while, we'll be in our spaceships right behind you :D

They already did that a couple million years ago. Excuse me, I have a sofa to catch.

It's been known to cause problems...

Right... and it's going to be the end of mankind...

It's got a decent chance I suppose... say some muslim fanatic organization gets a hold of nukes and starts using them?

In the future humans will begin to send prisoners to other star systems to serve their terms. These prisoners will rise and form their own colonies. They will then be known as the Terrans... I think you know what happens next....

Oh, right! What was I thinking!! The Muslims are actually closer to nuking the planet than SOVERIGN NATIONS or TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS are, aren't they!

beer, i doubt we will, unless we discover how to operate a wormhole. it would be neat to colonize on the moon for now, and even cooler to go to the far reaches of the solar system, such as pluto. i hope i am alive for that day, but something tells me i wont be. :(

It doesn't have to kill all of us, instead it just has to bring about the downfall of Western civilization. It's open for debate whether mankind would ever develop such a technologically innovative way of life if the slate were wiped clean.

Just imagine thousands of years of world wide Islamic theocracy... How much progress would we make as a society, as a civilization? Yep, ZERO.

Read James P. Hogan's Giants quadrilogy.. It has some interesting ideas along those lines.

I grew reading Science Fiction and accepted that going to the stars was the thing to do. But now I have to ask: why bother?
