Actually, it was at one point. The Arabs invented Algebra, had the first lighted city in the world, and were one of the only reasons we know much of anything about the greeks as they kept records when Europe was in the dark ages.

It is the general idea that progress happens in spite of religion, not because of it, and that religion is an inhibition to that progress. Think of fundamentalism, and of the Dark Ages, and of the entire freaking Islamic world. Note that I use "religion" in the context of an organized social force, not in the context of personal spirituality.

You know what I think inhibits progress? Gravity. I mean, think how much farther along we'd be in the space program if not for gravity. We wouldn't have had to spend all that time designing rockets powerful enough to boost a shuttle. Gravity is really keeping us down 😛

It's Software Bisque's TheSky. I also use Cartes du Ciel. I use them primarily for locating objects I wish to observe on my telescopes, but I can also control one of my telescopes with it. Here is what I am usually looking at before I localize my targets.

Mars is literally our neighbor and even at LS it takes 4 minutes to reach it. At LS....and we're FAR behind even knowing whether we ever even might be able to once travel just close at LS. This makes the thought of travelling to another star-system...hmm...VERY sobering....
Btw. it takes 4 to 6 hours at LS jsut to reach Pluto.

So....i have to exclude any thoughts about interstellar travel right now....but what about the other planets, in our solar system ?

I strongly believe that (soner or later) we will terraform Mars...there aer theoretical plans how to do that so it gets an atmosphere and more suitable environment. Yes...maybe not that far off in the future. We will live on Mars, i totally believe that 🙂

I also dont think it's not a question about the sense behind...it is much more something like human nature to explore and look what's around.....and i also think there might be attempts to go out from our solar system and reach other stars w/ planets - however i dont know how, what time frames will be involved, what travel speeds etc.....maybe something like that a crew gets frozen and put in a ship and they travel for a looooong, loooooooong time and then are woken up.
It will be done sooner or later as soon as it is technical possible.

Even on earth people do 'useless' things like climbing on mountains or diving in the oceans...its just how humans are 🙂

Edit: corrected the 12 mins to reach mars...it was from a chart with the distance Sun <-> Mars...so it's 4-5 mins from earth.

Okay, so conservatives, some of whom happen to be religious, wishing for lower taxes, tend to vote in favor of other issues besides NASA. How do we infer from that: "Because religion is one of (if not the) the largest factors in holding back the kind of progress needed to accomplish such a goal"?

If the budget for NASA gets voted down it's because the people don't want it, not because it's being sabbotaged by the Pope. It seems like a fiscal issue rather than a spiritual one, and trying to blame religion is a stretch at best.
