Will HT link Frequency limit CPU performance?

I have a Phenom II x2 @ 3.6ghz, stock is 3.0ghz. I also have a new radeon 5850, but not to happy with performance in certain games where fps dips below 60 once in a while, I.E. batman even at low resolutions like 1024x768 i get like 55ish at big areas of the game.

I realized my Motherboard Asus M2A74-AM has a chipset limitation of 1000mhz for the HT link...The phenom II I have is rated to go 2000mhz or 4000 MT/s...simple question is this motherboard limiting my Cpu performance? Or will I never really saturate 1000mhz in real world applications ??

cpu-z reports motherboard as follows
Chipset ATI RS690/RS690m (aka 740g)
southbridge ATI SB700

Your 1000 HT link is limiting your processor, but I really don't know exactly how much it's being limited.

I think the best way to find this out is if someone were to benchmark the difference between 1000 and 2000.

edit: On motherboards supporting higher HT Links, someone should be able to set the HT Link to whatever they want.

This is obviously a different motherboard.. but I think the results would be relatively similar given the HT speed.

Also, that processor isn't officially supported on that motherboard, dunno if that makes a difference. With the Phenom 2 940 it's about ~10%.. so it might be less on your 545.

I'm running an Athlon 2 x4 620 on my M2N-SLI Deluxe.. but having no-one to compare stuff with, I can't answer personally how much performance I'm losing.
