will HL2 surpass Halo 2 in sales ?

tough to measure up since HL2 was being sold even before the activation day as well as STEAM downloads, but what do you think actually sold more ? Halo 2 was at $125mil for the first 24 hours.

Considering the Halo2 strategy guide sold 270,000+ copies last Tuesday (the largest first day sales for the publisher since Clinton's My Life), I'd say definately no.

no way, it just seems like halo 2's release caused a much bigger hype than half life 2, walking around my high school i could hear everyone talking about halo 2 and even teachers knew about it

Nope. Absolutely will not. Consoles gerernate SO many more units sold than the PC.
Agreed. In a fair world, it should do better😉, but the top 5 Xbox games will likely all outsell HL2.

from the answers I'm getting, even if they dropped the price to $30, it still won't sell as much (units or $)...

Anyway, I ask because every other thread in here is HL2... unlike the 5 or so Halo 2 threads that day. 😉

Every other thread in here is about HL2 because today was the release day. 😛

Edit: Oh, and because Steam was screwed up for much of the day.

not in the first 24 hours, but over the next year absolutely. PC game sales are very dependent on word of mouth. Console games have a very short window that they have to do well. Once the word gets out that HL2 is something special (if in fact it is), it'll make the rounds.

i doubt it will ever surpass Halo 2 or GTA:SA which are both over 100 million in $$$ allready, both did over 50 mill on preorders alone, they are 1 and 2 on the all time list

Hell Halo 2 made more money in preorders then The Incredibles did on opening weekend

You do know this website and forum is largely dedicated to comuters and the internet, right? PC gamers can browse forums from their gaming PCs, XBoxer's and other console users can't do the same thing from their consoles as they'd have to get to a PC to do that...

Let see, to play Halo 2, I need around $200, $150 for the hardware, $50-60 for the game. What I need to play HL2 will cost me more that $200. Most people with a PC have integrated intel graphics which are barely good enough for DX 7 games...thanks to dell and intel.

And the fact that most people in here are PC gamers(nor not gamers at all), and have actually played more than 1 good FPS in their lives, and hence aren't as excited about Halo 😀

Poor guy came into best buy asking the PC techs if his brand new dell would run a certain game. We looked it up online, and found his computer had top of the line intel integrated!!! We told him it would look like powerpoint and he was teh sad.

When halo 2 came out, best buy moved a LOT LOT LOT of xboxes, enough to warrant saying "lot" three times.

Since its release more than 3 years ago the original Halo has never left the Xbox top 10 in sales. Totalling over 5 million copies. HL2 wont come anywhere near that. Neither will Doom 3

Halo 2 sold 2.3 million coppies in ONE DAY.

Blame the cheap @ss people buying the crap not the people selling it.

BTW Dell sells lots of high end systems with very high end vid cards.

Incredibles will own Halo 2 by the time it gets to video. You have to remember that Halo2 is being sold worldwide and that box office numbers reported for movies only show U.S. ticket sales. If you add up ALL sales, it easily triumphs.

Halo and Half life total sales to date are pretty much even.

Half-Life sold 5 million copies over 3 years. And that is without preliminary momentum. The thing with Halo2 is that probably 90% of the people with xbox bought it. If you think the xbox user base is going to double in the next year, then sure maybe it can make half-life numbers in 2-3 years. I think not. Half-life 2 is expected to sell way more than the original half life.

I might be wrong, but didn't the original Half-Life sell 10 million copies over the course of its life?
HL2 can't be played well by all computers at the moment, and it will continue selling 2-3,5 years from now (if anything like the original hl). Halo 2 will sell far more copies this year, but over the course of a lifetime, it will be pretty close.

Valid point about hardware... though I'd say it's more a convenience thing than having to spend more money thing.

Of course, thats deceptive. 15.5 million xboxes = 15.5 million xbox gamers. 300million pc users doesn't equal 300 million gamers, not even close.

If 5% of xp users game, then that's nearly equal to the number of xbox owners. Not to mention 2000/ME/98 gamers. HL2, if the word of mouth is good, will definitely win the test of time. console games sales are only good for the lifetime of the product. When xbox2 comes out (within a year), Halo2 sales are going to hit a brick wall.
