Will high gas prices boost bike sales?

Yeah, I can see myself jumping on my mountain bike to cruise I-10 to my local Krogers - 9 miles away - to grab a sack of groceries. On weekdays, of course, I'll need to leave at about 4 am to make it to work by 8 in downtown Houston. Yeah, getting a bike makes a lot of sense.

I love to ride, but not on the streets. Too dangerous, not a bike friendly area where I am. Actually, I'm sure more people would ride if they just had better, safer, bike access into cities and such.

You'd be in kickass shape tho......chicks dig the leg definition. 😉

You know what's really sad? Many CDC employees live within 2-5 miles of the main campus (the one I work at). The streets surrounding the area are largely residential, we have bike racks, lockers and showers. How many regular bike commuters do we have? About 20 by my count. Even when people had to drive away from campus to catch a shuttle bus back to campus (they were doing a bunch of construction that severely limited the parking) there wasn't much of an increase in the number of bikes on the racks. People are incredibly lazy....it'll take $4.00 per gallon to get them to change their ways.

dont forget about the extra food you'll have to pay for if you ride a bicycle. Can you ride your bike 20 miles on a buck fifty worth of food? According to FitDay.com thats 835 calories at 10mph "light effort" Might be tough... plus it would take 3-4x the time.

conservation of energy is a bitch...

For the original subject..

Talk at work for me has also included much talk of people who have never had bikes buying one now.
3 of us are taking a class on how to ride, including me.

I am gonna get a new Harley.. one of the low end 1200 Sportsters.

As for my work, we already have a lot of bikers so I think that helped push the issue a tad.

Peace
Rich

I think it will only effect their choices for new cars. Maybe they'll get a sedan instead of SUV or something. But I doubt they'll start biking to work.
I bike to work, but that has nothing to do with gas prices. I only live 4 miles away, so it's not an issue.

why do you think we are going to take the iraqi oil????? who cares how many people we kill, it's better than riding a bicycle...

Whatever...my road bike is handmade, has an 11-coat Imron paint job and is decked out with top-of-the-line Italian componentry. What's not classy about that?

Oh yeah......the funny tight shorts. Forgot. Sorry. 😱

What do you ride?

The main reason I don't ride my bike to work is the ride home at 1 am through some not so nice neighborhoods.

I would love to have one too. I like the Roadster best.

I ride my bike to work everyday. I'm not really a fan of showing up sweaty and hot... but then again i can't really help the latter. 😉

It's an Eddy Merckx MX Leader (with spiffy Team Motorola paint job.....looks very much like this bike.), although that's actually not my commuter bike. The commuter is an older aluminum mountain bike that I've stripped down and put kevlar-belted (broken glass? What broken glass? 😀 ) tires on and a rack. It's pretty plain-looking, but it's light, won't rust and is beefy enough I can hop curbs or cut through parks and such if need be.

I don't know if I'd ride home at 1am either. I've done plenty of after-dark riding, but mostly with a group. I make sure to haul ass if I'm by myself in a questionable neighborhood......hard to catch me if I'm doing 30mph, right? 😉

It's actually illegal to ride on sidewalks in GA......I'd assume it's the same over there in Alabama. I actually got into a shouting match once with a dumbass cop who told me to get off the road and ride on the sidewalk. *Sigh*.......you shouldn't be allowed to enforce the state code if you don't actually know it; it states very clearly that bikes on sidewalks is a no-no (although they don't enforce this for little kids, obviously). :frown:

Bicycle wouldn't be feasible for me.. too far to go. I'd love to have a motorcycle, but my insurance would be ri-god-damned-diculous. 🙁

Not necessarily. Smaller non-sportbikes are really cheap to insure for the most part. You definitely get nailed for something like a CBR600, but a typical standard bike like a Honda Nighthawk or similar should be pretty cheap for most people.

Um, don't know about elsewhere, but locally, gas prices FELL $.05 a gallon this morning..................Oil has been falling steadily and trends show it to continue..............this may be much ado about nothing.............

I almost bought an Eddie Merckx but I decided on a Trek 2300 instead.
