Although HBM promises a lower energy consumption for greater bandwidths, this is only part of what makes video card. The GPU itself with its thousands of cores is where the 'action'is. Just because a video card uses HBM, doesnt mean it will be faster, or will it? Is the thermal throttling that occurs in a video card from the GPU heat or the memory heat? And as for the the 'high bandwidth' component, do games really tax the already amazing 8 gbs bandwidth of GDDR5? Isnt high bandwidth really beneficial for servers where thousands of processes are being executed in parallel? Yes I know most server events occur on the CPU, not GPU, but I am trying to understand in which scenarios high bandwidth memory will be most useful.
