Will DVDRW prices drop soon?

I'm tempted to get a DVD writer. Especially since the NEC 2500 came out. However, I'm worried that they will drop a lot in price once again after I buy it. Much like how prices dropped after I paid >$200 for my Plextor 12x CDrw and >$200 for my Radeon AIW 32MB.

Are any new developments coming out in DVDrw tech? Anything that'll make prices drop some more? I want to clear space, but I still have 2 spindles of CD-Rs. 😛 I'm also cheap..

Sure the prices will drop and considering the fact that the 2X and 4X DVDRW were over $200 last year the NEC is a steal right now so why wait ? No shoppers remorse here 😉

When buying anything that is technology related, remember this. In one month maybe more or less the price will drop.
For example: 8x dvdrw drives can be had now for between $99 and $150 which seems cheap, but come March or April that will seem like a lot.

If you're cheap, just buy a $80 DVD+R drive and be happy you're only spending a little. Then when the dual-layer drives come out, you can upgrade again.

if you keep waiting for the price to drop to long a newer version comes out and the cycle starts all over. my rule of thumb is to wait 1 month after product is out and if i want it bad enough i buy it. the price is always going to go down after you buy something, that is computers. never ending cycle

Yes and no...

There is a point when a technology reaches a certain level of maturity and standardization. I'm going to wait it out a little longer.

On a side note, do stores sell recordable dvds in 10-25 packs cheap? I'd hate to buy a 100$ dvd writer and then another 100$ for a big pack of dvds..

Yes they do but you have to check the sunday ads in the paper or Hot Deals on Anandtech.

For instance a couple weeks ago staples was selling a 10 pack of memorex DVD- or +Rs for $10 including cases. This week BB has 25 DVD+Rs for $25 after $25 rebate.

That's a hard one: do you wait until the price drops to a reasonable level (but then you don't have said item), or buy it and use it (for as long as you can), which is the only way you'd be able to justify spending so much for it, especially if it drops like a rock soon thereafter.

I would have to say that you just need to have a little information and some luck on determining if you should buy or not. The NEC-ND1300A is now well under $100, burns everything I've thrown and it, and I'm glad I bought it nearly 6 months ago. I would be a little pissed if I had bought a 1X or 2X only, or one format only. That's the reason I waited: stupid format battle.

8X DVD burners can be had for $50-->$70 bucks right now easily. In 6 months they'll probably be half that. But thats easy enough to guess based on how quickly new hardware hits the street. There's really no point in waiting on these kinds of things though, since anything you buy is going to be cheaper 6 months down the road. By the time you're doing 'waiting' something new will be out and you'll want that instead.
