Will Double Density CD's Fly?

Seeing as they almost certainly won't be compatible with existing drives I really struggle to see the use. Particularly as the new-fangled Double Density CD-ROM drives and discs are likely to be as expensive as DVD-ROM, at least in the short term.

DVD has the advantages of being already accepted, and of dramatically higher capacity than this CD derivative.

Well if they somehow made them completly compatible I would definatly see them as an extreemly viable and popular used disc. Much more than 80 minute CDR's, which are kinda dumb because it gives so little more space (but sometimes you need just that little bit).

However if this just ends up another proprietary format from Sony hell then its dead already.

I thought Sony stated in their official announcement that most dirves would be able to read the DD media without modification ??

In the announcement I read, Sony said little modification. Basically, it will need new firmware. A new laser module will be required for optimum performance. It may also need a new DSP processor if the existing one isn't powerful enough to run the new firmware (the error correction scheme used in these double density CDs is different and more complex).

I hope these crash and burn. hehe..

the thing is, New Burners and readers will be needed for these. why? because the current drives may not be accurate enough for anything besides CD's (unless of course you have a DVD player, which has smaller data tracks and smaller pits then Sony's double data disks.)

I'd rather spend my money on that flourescent CD technology, becuase they don't require new drives, just need to modify your current ones! and they hold alot more info then these Sony disks.

See there are 2 alternatives, DVD Recorders, and the CD's that have flourescent die (can also be implimented on DVD's, making them hold alot more!), each has more size potential then this design from sony.

Edit, sorry it might not require much modification. I'd rather not do it anyway.

this is exactly why i posted that rant here... i mean DVD rewritable crap has not even been finalized and we have DVD. So, why the hell does GD-ROM or sony's crap even exist.

I mean, to read either, we need new drives, so... why not just embrace DVD since it is already out, and we new drives to read it anyway.

it's hardly just a firmware upgrade if a new lense and laser module is REQUIRED
