They were excellent stories. (Fear mongering, Corruption from within, a free people becoming complicit in the destruction of their own democracy, the so called good guys being more interested in maintaining their power base than the word of law from the Senate, etc.) But were terrible movies. The story from Revenge alone is far better on its own than the story in Force Awakens. (which is otherwise a better movie)
I agree. The stories, or at least the overarching themes, were excellent. What sunk Episodes 1-3:
1. Dialog - Christensen and Portman were terrible but I attribute most of that to the terrible dialog. Their "relationship" single-handedly sunk Episode 2.
2. Jar Jar and ALL Gungans - Jar Jar and the Gungans were terrible and really stupid. You could tell that Lucas saw dollar signs from toy sales to kids and intentionally made the Gungans for that sole purpose. Jar Jar almost single-handedly sunk Episode 1. I said almost because....
3. Neimoidians - These comically bad villains were a major reason Episode 1 was awful, but not quite as bad as...
4. Anakin as a kid - Having Anakin as a 9 year-old kid was a terrible, terrible idea, compounded with the idiocy of having him jump in a ship and destroy the droid control ship. IMO, the Anakin of Episode 2 should've been about the right age for Episode 1. We really didn't need to get the back story of his mom, how he was conceived, or...
5. Midichlorians - Just when I think I'm done listing my gripes with Episode 1, I remember a new one. Midichlorians were probably the dumbest invention in any of the prequels.
Revenge of the Sith was easily the best prequel but still falls short of the original trilogy IMO. The one major story element in RotS that I thought WAS awful was the reason for Anakin's turn. The initial reasons were much more complicated and probably more interesting, but Lucas decided to boil it down to Anakin turning to save Amidala using some stupid force power and didn't emphasize the other reasons for his turn. He could've left out the entire "I need to save Padme!" angle and it would've been much better.
