Will Democrats stand up for Democracy? Is this madness or sanity:

I agree with the author. But if ~50% of congress is not willing to do or say anything, what does that really say? We're pretty fucked.
With respect to the scorched earth policy, If dems say "there will be hell to pay", then all the republicans and the trump supporters will say "i'm being oppressed" /montypython. I wouldn't be surprised if trump's base started threatening violence over it. And then we're basically at civil war.

Rock and a hard place, but letting trump peddle bullshit is definitely the worse of the two options. If I had to hazard a guess as to why Biden and Harris haven't said anything, it's because they're busy actually doing their jobs, unlike Trump and Pence

I read it and I tend to agree. I think Trump is going to have to leave office no matter what the dems do, but by treating Trump's treasonous behavior as an aberration, we threaten to normalize it. I agree with the author's point that the GOP needs to be de-normalized. They are not a normal political party for a democracy, not any more. Dems need to be more aggressive in their messaging, not just now, but on a go forward basis.

The easy answer to is take a hot knife and cut this country in half. Politically, and socially. It is also incredibly bloody.

For it means each side retreats into their own reality bubble. And without a commonality we will eventually refuse the rule of law. Civil soceity only exists by consent of the governed. An alt-reality can only lead to violence. Seeing as one exists today, a LOT of people are going to die.

The difficult answer is learning how to disarm the ticking time bomb that is America.

I might suggest we need to shove Left. Hard Left. Give the Blue Dogs no quarter and send them packing so they might join the Bushes, the McCains, and the Romneys to build up a new opposition that can be more grounded. To supplant the existing Republican Party. But this notion is more of a gamble. A hail marry amidst a storm of insanity gripping the nation.

In all likelihood it is simply too late for us.

Trump leaving the White House under duress will not be the end of his rule. Instead it will be a new beginning for him as he continues to transform what was once the base of the Repub party into his very own legions of brain dead cultists dutifully believing every lie that comes out of his double speaking mouth. He'll use them to deconstruct our democracy stone by stone, even from a jail cell if the world is lucky enough in order to satisfy his lust for power, in order to regain his dictatorship so as to punish those who rose up against him.

He's already martyred himself as the unjust victim of a system that turned against him the moment he decided to run for office. He's locked himself and his suckered disciples into a struggle against everything that prevents him from successfully pulling off a coup.

I swear he's getting advice on how to destabilize the nation enough to retake it straight from Putin's lips to his singularly tuned ears. And let's not forget that the Repub party in general is going along for this phony MAGA credo ride of their lives.

There is a thread? Anyway, yea, that can be said for the whole of Trumps presidency, there has been another set of rules applied from the start. Think of it as the Special Presidency.. except that it replaces the regular Olympics.
I am not sure what can be done that is not already happening.

That being said, if you are a pro democratic values kind of person and you truly believe the the gop has transitioned to an anti democratic entity that is actively trying to subvert, kill, your democracy, your inherent status as a free man woman or child, and consider your self of patriotic nature... what choice do you have? You have to fight. There is only one way to fight in a democracy, assemble, organize, protest peacefully in huge numbers. You dont see that now. Guess that is what they mean when they say democracies die in broad daylight.

Expect reconciliation and unity to prevail as was done when Bush left office.

Is this on the money or hysteria in your opinion?
I mostly agree with the author.

Initially Biden's low key competency approach, filling out his key staffing positions and getting on with actually being prepared to govern the country made a nice contrast to the Trump rants.

But I believe at this point Biden needs to start aggressively taking initiative. For example, start holding daily national press conferences, including bringing in external COVID and vaccine experts. He needs to hammer home not just on saving near-term lives with masks and social distancing, but also messaging politically on the lack of coordination and failures from Trump.

This could at least provide a loud and coordinated counter to the Trump lies, and adds emphasis on Trump's abandonment of his duties.

I need to stop you there. NONE of this is about Trump. It grows beyond him, without him. Do not make the mistake of thinking it revolves around him. Far worse men will follow Trump and actually wield the power of stupidity like Hitler incarnate. Socially speaking, this is the beginning of the end. Trump is merely the first overt pustule on a gangrenous infection ripping apart and killing its American host.

I implore you to see the forest from the trees. You have it partially correct. The alt-reality bubble will continue to radicalize and harden its members. It is also recruiting and growing larger by the day. It is the antithesis of our continued existence.

That doesn’t set a good precedent. Even though trump has checked out and abandoned his duties, he is still the president and using the bullypulpit as the president elect undermines the president and its not something I’d want to see done to future competent president.

Norms don't apply to Trump. Screw him and his current job.

I agree. This is the end of America, Biden is just going to slow the bleeding down very temporarily.

Cut the US in half in a North/South direction. Build a wall like SK/NK. People move to their respective side and each side has new government ready to obliterate the other at a moments notice. The north can watch the south wilt away in their own government policies they always wanted to enact.

Conservatives fake news world they've built for themselves, just can't seem to hold up to reality. You're really in trouble with your reality problem when you start attacking Tucker the Fucker, your fucking hero, when he tries to expose you to reality.

Tucker Carlson is facing backlash from conservatives (msn.com)

Conservatives just a suggestion. Seek mental health.

I saw this and it's just sad.

of those 73 million Americans that voted for Trump, the vast majority are goners. And then you gotta figure there are a bunch who didn't vote or couldn't vote (for not being 18 yet). The Evangelicals and QAnon are millions and millions strong, and they may as well live on a different planet. The rest of the Trumphumpers are getting there though.

At this point that makes way too much of the country folks that don't exist in reality. They are civically useless in a functioning Western democracy. As Obama said, you can't have a civil discussion if you operate with a different set of facts. And Frum said If Conservatives can't win democratically they won't abandon Conservatism, they'll abandon democracy.

This past campaign season the Repubs led by their useful idiot showed without doubt that they would exploit any and all skullduggery to keep Trump in office. They are a morally barren cult masquerading as a political party. They have no credibility to speak of, they have no integrity, no honor and absolutely no say in defining what free and fair elections are because they tried everything they could to keep our elections from being that way.

So how does the nation deal with what was once an actual political party with a well defined platform and an legitimate ideology that they could be proud to stand behind and represent yet has now become whatever it is that their Little Dictator in Chief needs it to be. For now he has turned it into a raging angry mob blind to a reality they refuse to face and sharply focused around the myth that their leader got cheated out of office while totally ignoring the fact that their own party was/is doing their very worst to cheat Biden out of his win and these Trump cult members are still at it to this very day.

"Fear is the mind killer." You know how, if you are anything like me, when you suffer a disappointment or run into a frustrating situation you can allow your anger to out and to threaten or say things you don't really mean?

I think Republicans, with all of their negativity out of the box, having exposed themselves as cult worshipers, deniers of reality, and partisan hacks, having, as it were gone all in for a lunatic, are having a really hard time backing out. But I personally feel that the thing they are risking, a civil war and the potential end of America will prove to be a bridge they won't cross. What they are setting for is the attention they can get from posing a dangerous threat and that is as far as the majority of them will go. When it's time to put the pedal to the medal they will back down. The delusion they were cheated will just have too much counterweight to risk being wrong and bringing the country down. A sense of entitlement that defies reality hurts to put down, but they know deep down the danger of utter chaos. It hurts to discover that everybody you know for miles around is in a minority.

I read one guy in Texas said that if Trump is lying he's the greatest con man in history. He gets it unconsciously.

You're probably right. Most will not risk their own lives for a belief which, on some level, they probably know has a good chance of being wrong.

Scattered acts of terroristic violence are, however, entirely likely.

You offer them an alternative party. A third party will form and it will probably be a little conservative and a little liberal. What it won’t be is crazy Republican or democrat. I don’t know how it happens or when I just know that history tells us that it does happen.

Yup, supporting Trump gives many who have self esteem issues a sense of self importance they may feel is worth dying for.

The hammer needs to fall on conservative media or any media that is going to promote conspiracy theories, lies and alt-realities.

Bring back the fairness doctrine. Then begin leveling lawsuits against these companies that violate the doctrine. It doesn't violate 1A, just holds you accountable for lying to people.

Yea Fox may be levelling off now but... Then there is OAN, Sinclair etc... crazy stuff..

Bringing back the fairness doctrine will drive FOX close to or out of business, cripple the Repub party's propaganda spin machine and leave the base of the party stunned by the lack of lies, misinformation and hate filled talking points that they rely on to, among other things, respond to the criticisms being levied against them.

Of course, the party faithful will find other ways to receive their marching orders and talking points but it sure would be nice witnessing FOX and other conservative propaganda outlets telling the truth most of the time.
