Will degaussing a hard drive cosmetically damage the platters?

I want to get more hard drives so I can make more roses, but the only place I can think to get them from (aside from EBay, trying to do this without spending money) degausses hard drives before they throw them out. Would the induced electrical current mar the platters?

I might, it depends how big of a supply of hard drives I can get. If any ATers want one, I'll make it for a small fee + a hard drive + shipping both ways.

I dont have any spare HDs but i would pay atleast $10 + shipping for one. Obviously the packaging would be a little hard since you gotta make sure nothing gets deformed.

might want to email some xbox modders (check xbox-scene) you could probably get a stack of 8 giggers for basically nothing.. Or put a FS/FT post looking for dead hdds

I may be able to hook you up with a bunch (somewhere between 10 and 50) in a few weeks. Give me a PM next monday or tuesday or I'll forget between now and then.

What if we remove the platters ourselves, do we get a discount?

Should've known the hot deals crowd would come sniffing at this. 😀 It only takes me about 10 minutes to remove the platters so not a big deal. You'd want to make sure and pack the platters well so they didn't get damaged during shipping though.

I don't think shipping would be a big problem, actually. They're not fragile, just deformable. I can pick one up and toss it to myself without anything bad happening. They weigh very little too so not much inertia. I'd probably just wad up some newspaper and pack it tight enough so it wouldn't move around.

I'm thinking $45 apiece, $40 if you want to disassemble the hard drive yourself. It takes me about an hour to make one, and that seems fair compared to what I charge for an hour of computer work. I'll find out about getting a bunch of hard drives tomorrow. If I can get drives for free locally, then nobody needs to send me platters, I'll just ship the roses out.

take them to an art fair and charge $30,000

Say it's a commentary on the perpetual shift in the ideas of beauty. As we enter the 21st century the border between nature and technology blurs and gives rise to a surreal form of perfection and idealism that challenges our preconceived notions of beauty.

Show me the money!

Don't forget the environmental angle - I'm recycling, baby!
