Will DDR memory be used for the forseeable future?

Hi,
Im going to upgrade my PC next year, after the new AMD and Intel chipsets/sockets have been released. I was wondering if them platforms, and ones after than will still use DDR memory?
The reason being, is that memory is quite cheap now, so i was thinking of buying 2xTwinMOS PC3200 512mb memory modules now, and then using them when i upgrade the rest of the system, incase memory goes up in price.

Opinions?

They will move to DDR 2 soon which gives higher working frequencies.

They will probably still have boards that are fine with DDR for quite a while though, there are still boards that take SDRAM around now.

If you're talking next year, you should be fine with DDR and DDR2 is expected around Christmas/new year so it won't be until then that it gets even being near mainstream.

Forget about trying to buy now to avoid higher prices. Odds are they'll go down in price because that's just what usually happens.
Next year is a long time away.

zephyrprime is right. Prices are as low as they'll ever be on PC2100, but they most definitely have room to drop on PC3200, which is what you'll want to buy. I would also recommend waiting because DDRII will be out around New Year's (as Lonyo said) and who knows how quickly they ramp up those speeds.

If you were someone who was thinking about getting more RAM for your older computer (PC2100), I'd definitely say go for it now. But, in your case, I'd wait.

I`d buy the ram now, for use now, but DDR memory wont work on my system.
I still have a Abit KT7A-RAID mobo. So its strictly SDR only. Becides, im not exactely strapped for memory at the moment, i have 768mb of the stuff !

As with everything, the industry will probably bring out something radically new quite soon, as most of the types of RAM that we have now have been hanging around for some time. I'm going to wait for Athlon64 to come out and some new memeory format will probably come out in the meantime. The industry wants to make money, and they will.:sun:

I think the estimate for DDR2 board is for more than a year from now. But, that could all change. Just get the best stuff you can afford at the time - there is nothing you can do about new product announcements. They will occur - that is just a fact.

Memory for Athlon64 is not likely to change. The memory controller is built into the CPU not the Northbridge. Initially Athlon64 will only support single channel but dual channel, like Opteron is scheduled later.

Since it doesn't look like you buy hardware when it is first released, I think you will be happy with regular DDR for quite a while. It will be quite a while, even after DDR II is released, that DDR is phased out. The waiting game is a game that never ends. There is always something great on the horizon. I think that is one reason we all love this industry so much.

I wouldn't purhcase memory now just because of low prices because as with all computers parts, the price will fall. I would just save the money and buy what is released around that time. Also, by then there will be faster RAM and so PC3200 will fall in price even more.

I think ddr2 slots are backward compatable, at least in theory. By that I mean ddr memory is supposed to work in a ddr2 slot.
