I really like this game and have been using a friends key. I want a copy for X-mas. I prolly will go and get a copy of HL, but i'm afraid CS will go solo and not even use HL keys. So which should I get? CS Standalone or HL?

CS has gone solo. If you just wanna play CS, then just get CS, but if you want to play different mods, get HL, and then just download CS.

If you have a fast connection just get Half-Life, it's around the same price if you look smartly, and you can also play other great mod's such as Front Line Force.

Buying just CS would be more practical just because it saves you 10 bucks

Well, I like the mods for HL too. I have a burnt copy of it . Keys work but not online. Can I use CS key for HL? I doubt it.

But what if CS won't be a mod for HL then? I'll be pissed!!

Two people can't play online with the same cd key at once... and i have a feeling that valve will be dragging gooseman, and the mappers to their offices here pretty quick to do the stand alone

and i must say, gooseman has an awesome future ahead of him with his coding, and modeling skills

Gooseman and the CS team have consistently said there will be no stand-alone commercial Counter-Strike. I suppose the CS team's next game will be based on the TF2 engine, and I would not be surprised to see it developed from the ground up as a commercial product by the CS team and Valve.

I wish my friends would go buy their own copies and stop leeching off my key. Cheap bastards :|

TF2 Engine? What's TF2? Wasn't that supposed to be out for Neo-Geo? And then Playstation? And then Dreamcast? And then for Summer '99, and then for Winter '99, and then February '00, and then Summer '00, and then Fall '00, and now March '01?

konichiwa: Let's hope it doesn't suck like Daikatana. You're right though -- it's getting ridiculous. I am all for "getting it right", but this is silly.

In all fairness to Valve, HL was delayed almost as badly, because they finished it more than a year before it was released, then started all over again because it did not meet their expectations. I doubt anyone would now second-guess their decision, because they ultimately turned out maybe the best game of all time.

TF2 was initially conceived as a free add-on to HL, but along the way their plans got more and more elaborate and it turned into a stand-alone product, then into the most ambitious multiplayer shooter ever. Now they are creating a new engine for TF2, so significant delays were inevitable. Meanwhile, TFC is essentially what they promised early on for TF2; a very good free update of TF with the HL engine. Of course I never play it ;) because CS is about a million times more fun, at least to me.

If you want to hear me bitch about a very promising shooter whose delays are absurd, get me started on Duke Nukem Forever!

Good post, Tee_Edwards.

Also keep in mind, TF2 has only been in development since Spring of 1999. Any good game will take longer than a year and a half from start to finish.

All the work on TF2 prior to April of 1999 was repackaged and shipped as what we know as TFC. They then started from scratch (with the HL engine) for TF2. Since then, they've supposedly scrapped the HL engine and are developing the renderer in-house.

There are rumours of VALVe liscensing a physics engine from a company called Havok. Go download some of the cool videos. The physics are quite cool.

Ahhh nothing like some nice speculation early in the morning to get the 'ol mojo flowing.:)

Ok, my friend says to get HL so I can use the mods. I already have the CD. Can I use the CS key for HL to play on-line? (are they the same format?)

I bought HL Game of the Year Edition about 4 weeks ago. I can play CS online just fine.

I kinda like Team Fortress for the mass carnage and no waiting after you die. There's nothing worse than watching a pair of campers on CS.

actually 2 people can play halflife online at the same time. Maybe i shouldn't expose this but i've figured out their rather lame authentication scheme. See the first time you log on to a server is the only time WON authenticates. So if you and a friend with the same key go on the same server as your first server it wont let you. But if both of you go on 2 seperate servers to authenticate it will allow both of you to play. Then just quit that server and both go on the same one. It wont reauthenticate you and you can both play. Great huh? Anyways, I DO OWN a copy , but i tried this in my dorm hall with a neighbor and it works.

Just buy cs, it's $20. That's nothing! Support gooseman and his team. They did numerous BETAs for FREE before they benefited from CS.

If you just want to play CS, then get the standalone, if you want to play HL and other mods too, then get HL, then you'll just have to download CS.
