my 60Hz comment was about monitors, not flourescents.
1600*1200@75Hz = clearly visible refreshes = eye strain
If you can handle that, and 60Hz, more power to you. Refresh rates like that give me headaches after just a couple hours.
I can tell the difference between 75Hz and 85Hz at 1024*768, but 75Hz is still bearable...at 1600*1200 though, that's just crazy.

All I Know is it ruined mine. Staring at the same distance for hours on end was no good. They haven't gotten much worse over the last year or two...but in the first 6 months of working I went from perfect vision to just short of needing glasses.

Make sure you look away from your monitor every few minutes, that's all.

I got contacts for the first time last summer. Before then, my eyesight had been pretty stable. I started working my new job in October, which required pretty much 8 hours of computer staring, and by December my eyesight had went from -4.75 to -5.25, which is a pretty noticeable change. I couldn't read signs on the highway until I was 3 car lengths from them.

Do you have a link to these Prio glasses?

And what do you mean about your doctors saying "using your eyes won't hurt them"? Using them in front of a monitor or something else?

I've been using CRT's for years and Ive got some damn good eyes. However after a long day working on homework on the computer I sometimes develop headaches. I look forward to purchasing a good 19 or 21" gaming LCD in a year or so.

I haven't had my contact prescription change in a few years and my contacts are still working strong. I am on a computer well over 8 hours a day minimum. i use a 17" CRT at work and a 19" CRT at home both at 85hz. refresh rate is also key.

wait what is with all these 'facts'?

I was told by my eye doctor that your eye sight is 100% dependent on your genes. Nothing permanently reduces your eye sight from doing daily chores. Everything is a myth: Reading under a dim light, reading upside down, staring at the monitor for long hours. They may bring discomfort and get your eyes tired but will not have a permanent effect. Unless you do obviously stupid things like staring at the sun, looking at the laser beam, etc..

For people who say their vision has gotten worse past few years because of the computers is false. It just your genes.

Nearsightedness, or myopia, can be caused by your ciliary muscles squeezing your lenses to focus on near objects. With time and prolonged straining of your ciliary muscles on near objects and force your muscles to spazzle and lock into this near sighted position. If you stare at near objects for long periods of time, your muscles will re-adjust to this close view so that when you try to see distance objects, your eyes cannot focus as well. Going to the optometrist makes it worse, as the optometrist corrects your "distance" view but not your close up view. If you continue to strain your eyes on near objects (such as your computer screen) your ciliary muscles will continue to be strained and will make your nearsightedness even worse. This only helps to continue the viscious cycle.

To prevent your nearsightness from getting worse, it is recommended that you get reading glasses. They will help reduce the amount of strain on your eyes. Also it is always good to take periodic breaks from the computer screen. A recent study in Berkeley, came up with a "20/20" program to help deal with eyestrain that can cause increased myopia. It was concluded that a 20 second break every 20 minutes to help focus your eye muscles on distance objects can dramatically decrease the chance of your distance eyesight to get worse.

Someone back me up on this.
