Yes, it will ruin your eye sight and the solution is to buy the biggest monitor you possibly can and the buy wireless kb and mouse so you can sit across the room from monitor.

Yeah..I got rid of the crt's and use flat panels. Perfect focus and no more eye strain headaches or particle emission exposure.

staring at anything close to you for long periods of time is not easy on your eyes.

I guess trying to see all those small screws and connectors could cause problems...The only time I have to work on my computer is when I do an upgrade...so no problems with the eyes here. If you are constantly working on it maybe you should hire someone to fix it right the first time.

just make sure you are blinking properly. optician told me that sometimes people only half blink, so they end up getting faint bloody lines horizontally across their eyes where there eye lids did not moisen.

Another thing starting at a monitor can do is strain your eye muscles a little. This is quite easy to fix. You just have to do focusing excersies with your finger and the eye muscles regain their strength.

I find LCD's to be harsher on my eyes compared to CRT's. I had to buy wireless mouse and keyboard so I could sit on my sofa and nef:D

So has an LCD been proven to be better for your eyes than a regular CRT?

Also, will using those anti-radtion glare filters also help?

It's not the monitor sharpness or radiation that ruins your sight. It's that your eyes are focused for long periods of time 3 feet from your face. If you work on computers all day long, day in and da y out, this will cause your eye muscles to lose strength and you will become near sighted.

This happened to me when I used to work on a mainframe. I had to start wearing glasses. However, when I switched jobs, my eye sight returned. The solution is to take a break once an hour, look out the window and focus to infinity.

That's weird, i've always had perfect vision (and think i still have it) but i got my eyes checked and they told me i was farsighted. I still can't believe it, so i was wondering what could cause it.

Working under flourescent lights is worse than anything else, but a refresh rate of 75 or (ideally) 85 on your monitor will help reduce eye strain, 60Hz is the devil!

Really? Twice a cycle then?

BTW: I have been staring at 60hz sh!tty monitors for a couple years now daily, my eyesight was 20/40 (nearsighted) before, and it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse. Getting a nice 19" monitor soon, 1600x1200 @ 75hz, oh man....

I wear Prio (computer) glasses when i use a computer. I really helps with the eye strain. You should check them out.

On a side note, I have ask two eye doctors about this and both have said that "using your eyes won't hurt them".
