Will Celeron G3900 work with OC memory on a Z270 motherboard?

I would like to use Celeron G3900 with a Z270 motherboard. The motherboard says it supports "DDR4-4133+(OC) Memory", but the CPU says it only supports DDR4-1866/2133.

Will OC memory be able to work on OC speeds or not? If not, then what is the cheapest Intel 6th Gen CPU I can use? Am I limited to "K" models to utilize the OC RAM speeds?

I'm not ready to buy a high end CPU yet. When I will, I may still want to have a spare CPU that works safely with my motherboard, because:
a) I may eventually buy a future CPU that will work on this motherboard, but only after updating the BIOS (like 100 series boards with 7th Gen CPUs)
b) The high-end 7th+ gen CPU is not supported by my operating system of choice so I may need to install it with an older CPU, then switch to a later, newer one. I'm using Windows 7. Yes, this is retrocomputing. Please don't ask.

The ram will be okay either way, so don't worry about it.

It will just run at the lower speed if it has to with the Celeron.

I'd probably get the Kabylake G3930, though.

I don't think anyone is having much trouble with Kabylake on Windows 7?

win 7 is a pain on skylake/kbylake due to usb issues as well as other drivers.

Won't the Z270 board have problems with Win7?
only drivers would be the problem.

installing from USB is also a problem as it doesn't have native support for USB 3.0.

best thing would be to upgrade to win10 and install classic shell.

On my Ryzen I used a PS2 kb and Sata dvd drive to Intall Win7 IIRC. You could slipstream the usb drivers into your Win7 setup.

Thanks for all the replies!

I meant will the CPU work with high-speed memory on their rated high (2400+) speeds? It doesn't look so from the Intel site, but again, even top i7's don't support 2400+ memory according to Intel site.

Is this some hidden knowledge that Celeron doesn't work with high speed memory on its high speed or can I check this by myself? Which CPU does work?

Any socket 1151 CPU should work with higher-speed ("overclocked") memory, with Z-series chipset motherboard.

You just don't see most people attempting to pair faster-than-2400 DDR4 with a Celeron, because, honestly, it's pointless. You would get more performance by spending more money on the CPU, than faster RAM. Faster ram is like under 5% improvement, and scales downward with less potentially-unlocked CPU power. (So, again, pointless with a Celeron.)

And the increased CAS latency in DDR4 is a pain here.

Seems to be a non-issue to me...

Windows 7 will run fine however....its not a MS or Intel or AMD supported configuration. That means drivers may become an issue and also sooner or later you will stop getting Windows Updates

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ported-together-with-the-windows-version-that

From Dell (similar warnings from other OEM's). Essentially they are saying that if you order your system with Windows 7 they will also downgrade the CPU to Skylake.

http://www.dell.com/support/article...upport-for-intel-kaby-lake-processors?lang=en

Microsoft threatened this last year with Skylake but backed down under pressure from the big OEM's. But with Kaby Lake, everyone is on board.

Ive got a Ryzen 55 CPU and keep meaning to try installing windows 7 on a VM just to see what happens (VMWAre passes the hardware CPU ID to the guest OS).

Ive installed G4560 on Windows 7 x64 just fine so a G3930 whould work for sure as well, BUT on H110, usb controller and chipset drivers work just fine, the only problem is the IGP, is not supported, BUT there is a beta driver that works, search for 21.20.16.4526 beta driver.

I whould suggest stick to 100 series chipset for Windows 7, 200 series may give you issues.
