Will Celeron fcppga chips run on ppga board?

I know 533As and 566s work on PPGA only slotkets (my 533A does), and we had reports of some running on ABit S370 PPGA mobos. I think it depends on the mobo. Theoretically, the Copperons, unlike the FCPGA P!!!s, were designed to work on both PPGA and FCPGA mobos since they were meant to back-fill part of the .25 Celeron line.

If you want to be safe, get the adapter, but it probably won't hurt the proc if you try it without the adapter first. I did say probably, so better safe than sorry 🙂.
 
FC-PGA chips really should NOT work on PPGA boards. They have a few pins that are electrically incompatable with the old PPGA.

I've seen people try it. The result is NO POST.

I have never tried a Celeron II 533a but I don't see any reason why that one would be different from the rest.

Perhaps your slocket was actually an FC-PGA and you didn't realize? 😛

No. Mine's a MSI PPGA only slocket I got for a C400. We had a long thread on this about 6 months ago and the C533As and 566s WERE PPGA compatible. The FCPGA P!!!s are definitely not.

I can't speak for the 600+ Copperons however.
 
Actually, Thorn was running a C566 on a BM6 if I remember correctly, which is definitely a Celeron PPGA only designed board. If you check ABit's website, the latest BIOS update supports 566 and 600 Celerons.

I don't know what this proves, but there are definitely PPGA only mobos and slotkets that support FCPGA Celerons. Whether they had the foresight to engineer in some FCPGA compatibility or if the C2s up to 600 have some backward compatibility I can't say.

What we discovered though was that the C2s were more overclockable on PPGA only slotkets than they were on FCPGA slotkets, at the time. Eug just had a nice thread on more recent slotket developments about a month ago.
 
I have a Soyo SY-7IZB+ socket-370 with the Celeron 400 running on 75mhz Bus at 450mhz. I can get a 533mhz from memman delivered for under $100. What are the chances of that running on 75mhz Bus for 600mhz. I don't want to deal with maybe's with adapters and such if I'm not sure it's gonna work.
 
You mean a .25 Katmai 533 not a .18 Coppermine 533A right? Getting a 533 to hit 600 would be lucky. 600 is pretty much the upper limit for Katmai Celerons without Ubercooling. If you can run your C400 @ 500 you'll probably not notice much difference between that and a 533 @ 600, if you can get the 533 to hit that speed.

You're better off trying to get a 533A, 566, or 633 and trying to make them run on a 100 FSB. Even if they don't make it to 100 they'll almost certainly run at 75 or 83 and give you more MHz for similar cash.

Check the Soyo website and see what procs they say your board will support, if you haven't already.
