I've got 3 AM2+ boards, 2 of which are Biostar and 1 Gigabyte. The Gigabyte board is a 780G chip I picked up in 08, it has support for all AM3 chips including Thuban. Than my 2 Biostar boards are 790GX chipsets, one is the TA790GX XE(currently logged on that comp, only reason I'm providing just this board model specifically). 1 of the boards only has support up to the 925/945 C2 Phenom II chips, no Athlon II or newer Phenom II models listed. The other board has Phenom II C2 up to 955, and the first Athlon II chips listed, but no C3 or Thuban processors. Basically it's been close to a year since the last BIOS update, both are solid boards, but upgrade path is slim for AM2+.

yeah ASUS seems to be the most ontop of BIOS updates, im actually considering swapping my 790GX foxconn board into my server and using my ASUS 780G mATX board for my next upgrade when i go for a 6 core, only 1 PCIe but i can live with that.

BTW i agree that the power plane thing was total crap, i bought my ASUS board at least 6 months before AM3 was released, how could they have made a board for a socket that did not exist yet, AM3 has to be completly compatable with AM2+ in this case.

Oh and foxconn fed me the same crap about power planes but since they have not released a bios for my board in a year im pretty sure they are just to lazy or dont care.

I mean why would foxconn care it means i need to buy a new mobo and they are a HUGE OEM even if i buy another brand its pretty much guanteed to have foxconn parts on it or even made completly by them and re branded, its a win for them, lose for me.

If you really want to feel cheated, check out the approved CPU support list for the ECS GeForce6100PM-M2 V3.0, for which I paid $30.00 shipped (after rebate) and uses a three year old chipset:

All Socket AM2+ and AM3 up to 95W

Wow, that list is impressive. I also had good bios support from my ECS board. I think the latest BIOS update was released 3 years after I bought the board.

PCB V3.0 of this board was released in early 2009, so its a fairly recent model (for using a dated chipset). ECS can be pretty good for ongoing BIOS support but is not consistent. Some boards will get a surprise BIOS update after a year without any, other boards may get two BIOS updates within the first six months then no more.

The only two companies that impress me with consistent efforts to support new CPUs on non-current models are ASRock and Gigabyte, especially ASRock. ASUS has had several cases of discontinuing BIOS support prematurely on premium models, or dragging its feet for months and giving conflicting information (yes its coming, no its not) before releasing a surprise BIOS after more than a year of inactivity (and tons of complaints).

Appreciate the input there tcsenter.Heh,i actually had one of the earlier ASRock boards and it did ok.

In regards to what you said earlier and that remark putting the element of doubt in my mind about what the deal is with my board,i bugged them..again.^_^

Here is a better explanation to the exact nature of the problem and i asked this be a very official response to not leave any doubts:

Biostar:

The AMD 6-core CPU requires a dual power plane design (the core and northbridge voltage are controlled independently).
The TA790GX A2+ uses a single power plane design, and is not compatible with CPUs that require a dual power plane.
I asked if that applies to all version am2+ 790 series awaiting answer to try and help out the op and other who are waiting maybe in futility. Will update.Edited:for answer to that question.Just the messenger here:
There are two AMD 790 motherboards that support AMD 6 core:

TA790XE3: http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=435

TA790XE: http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=435

These two motherboards have a dual power plane design.

To me,it seems left hand did'nt know about right hand or else why build a limited AM3 compatible cpu motherboard? Not in the brochure, lol.Rules out any signifigant upgrade for me on this platform.Moving along..

ahh wrong. New sockets AMD3 support older am2+ cpu's. Not older sockets supprting newer cpu's.

Head on over here and have a read.

RTFM

Oh even wiki got it right

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_socket

look at the bottom of the amd socket family compatability lists.

am2+ sockets will not run a am3 cpu. Power plane changes and a few other things are different.

Its not just s bios revision.

sorry you feel duped.

am3 cpu's will never run on am2 board. Power plane differences and other issues aside.

AM3 socket supports am2 am2+ and am3. but am2+ and am2 will not support am3 cpu's.

got it now ?
so much fail in one post.

My friend owns a Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P. Its an AM2 board. He is running an Athlon II X2 250. It also supports 6 core AM3.
