Never watched a USA vs. Mexico soccer game? It's madness on the field and in the stands.

That presumes people are already in the US and interested. We are talking about getting those who aren't interested to want to watch. USA vs Mexico won't do it for me.

Where have you been? It's not David Beckham that will make it big, but the soccer moms of America. For the passed decade, they've been taking their sons to soccer instead of other activities, so a new generation is born.

I heard that all stops at college level when everyone takes up basketball, baseball, American football, etc.

Yeah, I would even argue the interest in soccer declines in HS, possibly earlier. 20 years back soccer was the cool thing to do when I was young (little league age), but very few continued to play into HS.

nope, can't fix a borring sport 🙂

I think Europeans and Americans have different definitions of boring - for me, boring is where the play stops every 5 seconds and everyone just stands around.

Americans have very short attention span, they cant watch a game 45 mins uninterrupted, also the ad revenue would be less if they cant have a commercial every other minute 😉

(You don't think they got the name from taking their sons to practice badminton do you?)

Edit: If anything, I think Victoria will 😉

In every thread someone brings this up.

NO kids have been playing soccer at young ages since the 60's. Kids play soccer because it is fun playing, and the parents think it is safer than the other fall sport, football. After they get older, they want to play football and argue with their parents. Sorry.

It is also one of the cheapest sports to play. Minimal equipment for kids who are growing a foot per year.

Beckham is not that good first of all.

Second, one player in soccer cannot carry a team, the same way as MJ did in basketball.

Therefore, the attendance will increase because of him some.

Than, everyone will realize what a waste of money it was to pay him to play in the States

if no ones scores for 10-20 minutes, then Americans won't watch it

It seems that people who watch hockey would watch soccer. They are both like watching paint dry for an hour followed by a 20 sec burst of excitement.

Why the two teams hate each other: ( a lot of history of dirty play)
GNR Style
Linkin Park Style

Football (soccer for you ignorants) came before American football. The latter was derived from the former.

American football should be known as handball. Soccer should be known as football. Every other country cannot be wrong about this. Time to face the facts.

Yes, a game that started (historically derived from soccer, and still literally started by a foot today) by kicking with the foot and that uses a ball that is about a foot long, and whos top scoreing players only use their feet should not be called "football".

No, worldwide football (soccer) should become kickball. Then it all makes sense. Otherwise goalies should not be able to use thier hands, and players should not be able to their body or heads. I mean, we have to limit it to the body part mentioned in the name right? Just like basketball is named after the body part used. And baseball is named after the body part used.

Beckham will sell tickets...more foreign players (that are good) will come to make money...popularity will grow.

Are you kidding me? Hockey > *

I don't really see how. Soccer isn't popular as is, and people are more interested in Beckham as man-whore/boy-toy than his playing ability anyways. That and footbal is a 'mans' sport.

...and yet somehow people in America still hate soccer fans.

In a sport where there are like 11 guys on the field and the score typically ends up 2-0, 1 guy isn't going to make a difference. Sure, the tabloids and talk shows are loving Posh and Beckham but I don't think anybody else really cares. I also think it will die down soon. Soccer is just not fun to watch if you don't really know what's going on . My generation (I'm 30) didn't grow up playing or watching and nothing is going to change that.

Your post makes no sense... All sports are named after something that defines them, and obviously the defining thing about football (SOCCER) is that you mainly use your feet... Now technically, the perfect name would be Handlessball, since hands/arms are the only thing you cant use

Thing is any way you put it, soccer is much more worthy of being called football than american football, and thats obvious... IF you wanna change names, change american football to handballwithkicks and soccer to handlessball like I said

In Australia they play a bit of American football, and the call it grid iron, which just sounds cool. They also have their own type of football, which they call football, and is more like rugby than anything else. The article 'football' on wikipedia is a good read.

Soccer?! Bwahaha. No. A British pansy (yes, it's redundant) is not going to make a difference.

Man, you should come over here for a holiday, they love people like you here. In fact I suggest you walk into a pub and say exactly what you just posted. This will be sure to start a lively debate about the merits of British vs American sports...

I think he will make a difference. With him coming over, other foreign stars are watching this and may want to do the same thing (basically finish their career here). Jose Mourinho (Chelsea coach) has stated he would like to one day coach in the US. I could also see people like Ronaldo coming after his AC Milan days. Even though these guys will be at the end of their career, they will still have a lot more skill than most of the league and the celeb factor will bring fans.

Doubt it. It's just not a popular sport here in America, and I dont think it will ever be.

Football>Soccer 😀

It already is popular, and it is fast approaching baseball in popularity. Baseball fields are being replaced by soccer fields.

One thing that will put soccer over the edge though: a US World Cup.
