I don't think I'd mind it as much if they'd consolidate the damn taxes.

In addition to Federal and State, there were also:
- local taxes
- per capita tax
- property tax
- possibly a school tax independent of the property tax, but I'm not sure on that one
- "occupational privilege tax" - god I love these stupid names. Just make it say, "Government Corruption tax" and get it over with.

If you notice it is mostly in states that are considered liberal....yet they keep voting these idiots into office and getting the same old ream job as their jobs head to states with friendlier cliimates.

Most local governments, muchless state governments, don't have the funding to pursue small amounts of unpaid taxes. I highly doubt they have the information and capability to contest whatever you do pay as well.

Funny, I've lived in SF, CA, the capital of liberal hippies all my life, and I've never heard of this local tax thing. Maybe you should crawl back to P&N where you belong.

When/if they catch ya, they'll probably bitch a little.

Most want a return if ya owe or not.

I think my city gives ya a little fine...5 - 10 bucks if ya don't file.

You'd be surprised. The tax collector is a subcontractor to the township, and is paid based on how much tax is collected. They are highly motivated to get the money. And verifying the records is pretty easy. The state gives them the income numbers from each person's W-2 forms, the tax collector looks up what was paid throughout the year, and that's all there is to it.

Since the tax is only on earned income, they don't need to fuss with anything else but W-2 forms. No deductions, no exemptions, just take the gross wages number from the W-2, move the decimal point over two places, and that's the amount of tax due.

local = city taxes, at least here. Some cities require you file taxes if you owe them or not.

On top of your State income tax?? And you people wonder why your jobs are moving south.
When we lived in bama we had a local tax simply because of where MrsSkoorb WORKED.

Nonetheless, you're otherwise right. The north is hemorrhaging because its taxes are egregious.

I pay $2k year to my crap-ass little township crap garbage (another $4100 in school taxes, for a grand total of over $6k/year property taxes, no wonder NY cannot attract more people, eh?). I have no idea what it's buying me. I think it buys me free recycling pickup. Honestly, I cannot think of anything else this town f**king does for me beyond that.

i just received a failed to file local tax delinquent form in the mail today. wtf, i never received an original form to begin with. now i have to pay 3% more of the income. apparently in my township i have to file quarterly taxes if i don't have it come straight out of my paycheck. fuckers can rot in hell

nope never heard of them. man that would suck have to fill out Fed, STate and Local tax?

I would simply move from that socialist haven. I do not even think there is any legal standing for the municipality to require you to pay income taxes.

You've never lived in NYC I guess?

You guys really think the 1% local income tax in most PA municipalities is a horrendous crime to your freedoms? The state income tax is a flat rate of 3.07%, which is pretty low, and the sales tax is 6% w/ no local additions (except 1% in philly), which is also pretty low. It really isn't that bad....

(I won't comment on the Philly wage tax...*shudder*)

Anyway, when I was going to school in philly and my permanent address was Reading, Berks County got pissy and yelled at me for not filing the form - even though i'd paid my taxes to philly, not them. I just filled it out with all 0's and mailed it in, no problems.

By no means do I claim to be a tax expert, but the only taxes I have ever heard of are Federal, State, and Estimated. And I worked for TurboTax for many years.

Could explain why the local tax section of the program is not so good.

My brother just found out that his township (small town) has a 1% income tax. He has lived there for four years, and just got a letter two weeks ago. He now owes something like $3,000 + late fees. He called up some of his friends who live in the same town and none of them were aware of it either.

You should get the NJ tax back at the end of the year
