Will Anandtech survive the test of time?

So I was thinking to myself just now, "Provided that we survive the nuclear war in 2012 and the second coming of Jesus in 2036, will Anandtech be here for decades to come?"

It's really something to think about. I have seen sites come and go. But Anandtech is different, we are a community. But will I be able to log into Anandtech when I'm 80? If so, will I still have the same account with 400,000 posts?

What happens when the owner(s) of Anandtech decide to retire? Will they sell Anandtech to another company? Will that company then sell the site out and turn it into a tech store?

Of all things you can ponder about the world by the time you're 80, you think about this dumb neffest forum?

I wonder where North Korea will be in 50 years. Kim Jong Il's reign is falling short, his people are starting to realize how shitty their country is (due to fancy South Korean drama videos circulating underground) and he has no legitimate son.

When I joined this site in like 98 or 97 or whenever the hell it was I sure didn't think I'd still be posting here in 2008. So who knows!

Sites like Slashdot have survived the dot com bubble burst. It stands to reason that similar sites will survive as well. As long as the ownership doesn't do anything stupid and drive away the members.

If you look at the Wayback Machine, you'll see AT forums are dying a slow death. They were much, much busier back in 2003 and 2004 and have been slowly sliding downhill since.

So I can safely say no it will not last the test of time.

I disagree. The splitting up of the forums makes it appear that way. I've definitely seen an increase in the number of online users even in the relatively short time I've been here.

I think that text-based forums will eventually be replaced with something else. I give it ten years max. Maybe some of the old farts will hang on, but once they're dead it'll kind of phase out.

I, for one, actually care more about AT than NK.

nah, it was much, much, busier a few years ago. Every second you refreshed, at least 5 new posts came up.

Your profile says 1999. I assume it's felt like an eternity though.

Anandtech has been here longer than 99, these are the new forums.
