Well, the title says it all. I have a SVC GC68 with the fan it came with (32.5CFM) and my XP 1600+ is getting REALLY hot. It will hit 60C during game play and hard lock. I know it is a heat issue because I opened up my case and sat a big ass fan next to it blowing air in, and I never had a hard lock again. :( Anyway, just need to know if that HSF will fit on this board,

Yes it'll fit. And despite what it says on Alpha's website, it WILL fit on Rev 3.1 boards...this I know from first-hand experience.

I had the first revision awhile ago, and a Swifty 462A fit on it, so the Alpha should be fine..:)

Alright. Thanks a lot guys. Damn, with my current HSF I'm getting 56C idle!! If the reading isn't totally accurate it's pretty close, because the heatsink is hot as hell! I think some of it has to do with the case as it doesn't have the best airflow but damn, 60C+ while playing games?! This started off as a cheap upgrade but it looks like I'm going to have to get a case and another heatsink. I'm going all out and getting the ANTEC 1080AMG and the Alpha. If this doesn't take care of my heat problem I don't know what will. :frown:

Damn, do any of you know where I can get the Alpha from? Newegg and Plycon are sold out! :|

The PAL8045 won't fit properly on the newer V4 K7S5A's, they use a taller capacitor next to the DIMM socket. You can bend it (the capacitor), you might break it. Use at your own risk.

How the hell are you supposed to know which version of this board you have? I have looked all over the motherboard and I don't see "Rev 3.1" or "Rev 4" or whatever anywhere. ]

I want to get a Pal 8045 for my ECS K7S5A and combine it with a 12dba Papst fan for the quietest possible system. Temps don't matter too much to me as long as it's stable, but I might go with the Panaflo 21dba cause it pushes more cfms. I'm rambling. Sorry...

Excellent question. I just ordered the Alpha so I'll know pretty soon if in fact it does fit or not. I'm crossing my fingers.

Good luck to you. If it works for you, please report back, because then I'm going to buy the same heatsink. BTW, where did you buy it from? I can't find it for sale anywhere online.

Actually, if you're ordering from newegg, most likely it's going to be a v4.0 (they sell an aweful lot of motherboards, and I bought mine about 6 months ago).

But to tell you the truth, you should know what board you have simply by looking along the outside edge of either the top or the bottom of the board. I believe you'll see "v4" or "v4.0" printed near one of the corners somewhere if my memory serves me correctly.

Out of curiousity, how much ventilation does the case have? Does it have an exhaust fan other than the one in the power supply?

I'm asking because I am thinking of closing up my case. ( just thinking :) ) It is now open and has a 120mm 80cfm fan blowing at the CPU.

Ya dude, I know what you mean. For some reason it's pretty dang hard to find now. I got mine at 2cooltek.com with a YS Tech (adjustable speed) fan for $44 ($49 shipped). Not a bad price. :) I've used 2cooltek in the past and they have been great. If you want an Alpha, check em' out because I don't know who else has them in stock.

My case really sucks as far as ventilation, so I have my side panel off. Right now I'm sitting here at 52C writing this! :|

SunnyD, have you actually tried mounting an Alpha on a K7S5A v4.0 board? I have two capacitors next to the DIMM slots but they are pretty far off from the socket. You know what's funny (well not really), my heatsink cost almost as much as my mobo. :(

Actually, yes. What's more is I remember it clearly because my Alpha has a little metal spur (probably got dinged in shipping or something) on the corner that sat over the cap.

It "looks" like there's going to be no problem with clearance, but I had to push the cap over to about a 30 degree angle to get it to fit right. Even so, the heatsink was a little crooked.

Bad case ventilation will put a serious hamper on any heatsink's performance. The specs for your current heatsink say it's good up to an XP1800 processor. Perhaps some case fans would be a better option; Bestbyte.net has good ball bearing fans for $3, available in various airflows to keep noise levels down.

THIS SUCKS! I have a revision 3.1 of this board and the capacitors near the DIMM slots are too tall. So no go for the Alpha. :( But the good news is, with my new case my temps are within reason. My max temp now is only ~49C (opposed to 60C+). :)

Well, I'm updating an older thread. I found a deal for a Pal8045 with a Papst fan on eBay that saved me about $25 rather than buying it new, so I jumped on it and decided to try installing it on my ECS K7S5A rev. 3.1 even though JackBurton didn't have any luck. I figured I could always sell the heatsink/fan for about what I paid for it anyway.

Long story short, it fits my motherboard. The noise from my case has been reduced immensely and I can't wait to make 1 or 2 more modifications to further reduce the noise on my system (lord knows I wish I'd bought Seagate Baraccuda IV drives). I'm cooling an Athlon XP 1700+ and have been running Seti for about 4 hours so far with no problems.

However, using SpeedFan, it seems that my CPU temps with a full load are 68 degrees celcius, which I understand are quite high. I didn't use any artic silver, so that might be an option to reduce the temps somewhat, but I don't like the idea of having to uninstall and reinstall the heatsink again. It's quite a bitch to get onto the motherboard. So I might just live with high temps, as long as they don't effect the overall system stability. Knock on wood. Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know.
