Will an 8X AGP card work in a 2X AGP motherboard?

I don't have the card yet. I have to order it. But I don't want to get it home, find out it doesn't work, then have to RMA it. That's why I'm asking first.

Generally speaking, if the card uses the old style AGP plugs (3 separate rows of pins, as opposed to 2 rows for AGP 4/8x), then it should work.

The 9250 chip can still do 3.3V signalling as required for 2x AGP mode, and the card does have the 2nd key notch to prove it. That'll be a Yes.

Awesome man. Thanks!

Okay.

I've got a Radeon 9600 and an old Pentium II board.

Want to try it?

An AGP8X card will work in a AGP2X slot, as long as the AGP8X card has a universal AGP connector (3 rows of pins). AGP8X cards like the GF FX 5XXX series, 9500/9700, and 9800 (R350 core only) all have universal AGP connectors.

I don't think it will work with your old PII board. The last I heard, all Radeon 9600 cards lack a universal AGP connector (4X/8X only), so it probably won't even fit into the slot.

2x boards are pretty old. Even if it did fit, I'd be concerned about the power specifications of the motherboard's AGP port.

Well I guess I'm gonna find out in a couple of days. 😉

Not a problem. The Radeon 9250 is a low performance, low power consumption chip that doesn't even exceed the AGP 1.0 power allowance.

You're a wealth of knowledge. Thanks Peter! 🙂
