Can I use the Alpha w/ the P4 instead of the retail HSF?

i know the alpha is a bit better overall than the avc sunflower. wondering if it'll fit and if it'll be worth the hassle?

I'm not gonna go out of my way to buy one, i already have one that's comin off my amd system.

hey platinumgold,

somehow, i really doubt the heat sink will fit on whatever p4 motherboard you get. as far as i know, this heat sink is only compatible with socket A processors. here's the compatibility list for the pal8045. if u want to see what else they've got, u can try searching alphanovatech.com. they may have something specially designed for all these new overclocked p4's out there.

good luck. :)

No, you can't use the Alpha. The P4 uses a completely different socket and retention mechanism from previous processors. There are holes in the motherboard for the retetion mechanism, but they are not laid out the same way. Plus the P4 uses a higher clamping pressure and probably has a different height from the motherboard than the Socket A design. If you know what you're doing you might be able to bodge it on with some custom bracing and hold-downs, but this definitely isn't an easy swap. Check Tom's Hardware and Overclockers for pictures and some articles about the P4 retention scheme.
