will a universal adapter work on a laptop?

I have an old goldstar laptop (386) and I have lost the power cord. any ideas where I can get one?

would that be the power cord together with the ac/dc transformer?

yes. all i have is an empty socket on the back of the laptop.

Somebody at work bought one from Fry's and found that it would operate the laptop but not charge it, maybe because some laptops have lithium-on batteries that can explode if charged wrong.
