Will a stock AMD 64/Opteron heatsink/fan fit a socket A motherboard/CPU?

I got a retail, 939 Opty 146 that came with a regular HSF (it also comes on all the Athlon 64 3000-3700 or so) that I upgraded to the stock dual-core heatpipe unit. Now that I have it as a spare, I'm wondering if it would fit/work on a Barton socket A CPU?

In a word, no.

The mounting points are completely different.

939 used the same bracket as the 754 A64s.

Socket A cpus (Athlon/Sempron) had heatsinks that mounted directly onto the socket. The exception being those motherboards that had the 4 holes for mounting big heatsinks directly to the PCB.
