Will a retail boxed P3 700E generally OC well or is a specific stepping needed ?

Will a retail boxed P3 700E generally OC well or is a specific stepping needed ?

That is the question. I have seen reference to stepping "ccO", also the fact that vendors charge a large markup for this stepping. Is it fairly necessary to use this specific stepping to get to 1 gig, for example ? Or will the retail boxed 700 E also usually OC well ?

Thanks,
Jerry

Just make sure, if you can, that you don't get an older cA2 stepping. I have a PIII 700E cA2 and it starts to wheeze past 800MHz. I'm looking for a local shop that will either guarantee a cC0 or at least will let me look at their stock so I can read the S specs off the retail boxes. Many have had good luck with the cB0 too. If you want a guaranteed overclocker, consider buying a pre-tested CPU, for example, from bonkers325 in the FS/FT forum.

I would think most 700's o/clock but to what degree is entirely dependent on the individual chip. at this time, you should probably only find cBO or cCO steppings of the chip in a retail box. from the feedback of alot of people, the cCO stepping o/clocks well but so did alot of cBO chips so you'll just have to chance it with either stepping.
btw, looking at the product code on the outside of the box , the last string of letters & number will tell you what stepping chip is in the box!

I have my 700 @933 and it is the older cBO stepping. Runs a little hot with the golden orb thought so I had to get a little extra cooling. Nice and stable now.

Most cb0 steppings will hit 933 with a small increase in voltage. cc0 steppings will hit 933 with no increase in voltage. Atleast that seems to be the general trend.

remember that the default voltage for a cCO cpu has now increased to 1.7V! 😉

For a cB0 700E 1.65V is stock. A 700E at 933 at 1.7V is technically stock voltage, being that a retail 933 runs on 1.7V

my 700E runs 933 1.7V not a hitch at all.. super stabe.

I have an SECC2 700E Cbo that will not post at 933 and has trouble above 112 FSB. And I have an Alpha with two huge fans. I got it for free so I am not complaining but it was not as easy as running 550E's at 733 with the stock heatsinks.

you can try emailing compuwiz who frequents these forums! people only have positive comments about him here.
