Will a regular Athlon XP chip work in a Athlon XP laptop mobo?

The pin layout is the same exact thing and so is the FSB, right? The only difference is that the mobile chip has an unlocked multiplier, right? Otherwise, school me.

It is the same in that regard. However mobile chips are binned to run at the lower voltages, so there's a possibility the laptop's thermal systems cannot handle the higher TDP desktop CPU. Just get a Mobile CPU, play it safe

I'd personally not take the risk, the mobile chips are unlocked to allow 'throttling' down of the chip for temperature reasons, the desktop chips don't have this, for obvious reasons (You can stick a dirty great heatsink on it).

Mobile chips do work in desktops, but I'm not 100% about the other way around.. Perhaps google will yeild some guides/reviews?

They are physically the same as other socket A chips, but for powerNow features to function you will need to do some bridge modding. Also, mobile XPs are usually binned to run at lower voltage.

if you have an unlocked chip its it can be made a Mobile, its not to hard.

I too would be wary of putting a desktop chip into a laptop. New laptops are already capable of frying some eggs and maybe a hash brown. Sticking a desktop CPU in there might let you roast a whole chicken.
