will a radeon 9800XT and an FX5950 ultra become...

Somehow, I gett the feeling that 2D images can't get too much more complex to render the 9800XT as slow as TNT2s are today.

Ironically, I probobly would have said the same thing 5 yrs ago...

Actually after 5-6 years, radeon 9800XT and an FX5950 ultra may become $40-$50 video card, but quality
of the video card will not be as good as today's because manufacturers also have to keep the cost down too.
They will use cheaper components to manufacture the video card at that time.

If you look at the TI4200 as example, when it was sold for more than $200. It came with 3 output(VGA, DVI and SVGA),
good quality components, such as capacity, RAM. Some manufacturers even used 8 layers PCB. If you look at those
cheaper TI4200(sub $80 range) video card, you will find that most of them only has VGA output, and 4 layers PCB are
used.

actually u cant say that mate.maybe by that time they'll use some cheaper but stronger material to cut down costs.so even if they use 4 layers of PCB it'll be equal to todays 8 layers 😀 what do u guys expect the clock rates of the cards wud be by then? 🙂

I don't know...we ARE making a comparison to a TNT2, which is now useless for anything 3d (even screen savers).

5-6 years is an awfully long time, especially in the technological world. Think of what has happened these past 5-6 years. And technology is moving even faster. 5-6 years and i dont even think they can handle the minimum requirements of the games during that time. BUt of course, that depends on how fast the game industry move. Doesn't matter if you have a radeon 20 XTI etc.etc..if the games they're making runs on a 9800...

Well yeah. But even now the lowest card you can actually play new games on is a GF2, with low quality. Now you can play most games with a 9600 XT and high quality...it will degrade, and in a bit over two years, no longer develop for such cards.
Right now, due to how many people have GF2 and GF3 level cards (such as the GF4 MX and GF3 Ti 200), it would be STUPID to release a game that will not play decent on them. However, next year, that figure will likely be down to the GF3 Ti 500 and GF4...and so on.
You can ignore some of that with games like HL2 and Doom3, that are being designed from the first to be revolutionary technology showcases that will set the new yardstick for quality (however, by all accounts, both of them will be able to run, if crappily, on very old vards, just still requiring heavy CPU power).

I was using a TNT2 up untill October 2003 😛

The 9800XT and FX5950 will be under $100 in 2 years (probably less).

HL2 and Doom 3 will run decently on Geforce 3s. Remember that Doom 3 will be on the XBOX. In regard to the TNT2 being useless for everything modern 3D, remember that Longhorn (and probably later Windows) will use 3D effects such as Pixel Shader 2.0 for OS menus, so top of the line cards of today may even have trouble with max graphic settings in the OSes in 6 years.
