Will a PCI-E 1x card work in a PCI-E 16x slot?

I have a shuttle that has two expansion slots. A PCI slot and a PCI-E 16x slot. I need to put a 1394b card in the Shuttle and the PCI slot is already occupied. I remember reading some where that you could use a 1X PCI-E card in a 8X or 16X slot. Will I be okay ( as in everything working ) if I put the 1X 1394b card in the 16X slot even though it is a 1X card?

yes, PCI-e 1x can go in a 1x,4x,8x or 16x slot. However a PCI card CAN NOT fit into a PCI-e slot of any kind. It sounds like you said you already have one PCI slot taken, and you want to use the PCI-e 16x slot for that card. A PCI card in any PCI-e slot = a broken slot and a broken card.

Naw,

I have a PCI data acquisition card that will take up the PCI slot. I just needed a 1394B port and since the PC has onboard video I was hoping that I could use the PCI-E 16x slot for that.

I just needed to make sure before I spent money that is not mine.

Thanks for the help guys 🙂

just make sure that the 1294B card is not pci. it should work...why not get some usb device? it would be less of a waste and probablly a long time investment as USB seems like it will last quite a while.

Actually, you may have to be careful depending on the motherboard BIOS. AFAIK, some X16 slots are implemented in such a way that only video card will work in them.

There's no good reason that it wouldn't work though, and in fact it should work, but you'd need to do some research to find out if your specific motherboard has a proper full PCIe implementation on that X16 slot.

(This is the same reason some boards are not compatible with the 7950GX2)

I don't have the option of using an USB device because the device in question is a 1394b camera. Nobody has a SFF PC with onboard 1394b but plenty have on board video.

Well I went ahead and bought this 1394b PCI-E card:

Hopefully it works otherwise somebody will have to live with an ATX case.
