Will a monster heatsink matter when overclocking the northwood?

No doubt about it, the northwood is a great overclocker. My question is for owners of the northwood cpu is that big monster fan/heatsink necessary. ie, will a retail cooler be enough to oc it to the max or high up there or will a volcano 7+ make a big difference, lets say like 200 mhz better oc? And if so, can anyone recommend me a good heatsink/fan under $30. How good is that $30 volcano 7+ deal at pc club for anandtech users? Thanks.

I have the same question. Actually I have my 1.6A running @ 2208 , 138MHz FSB w/ stock HSF(stock themal pad) and stock voltage core, I got 29/38C idle and 33/53C when running Prime95 . My question is if I apply the ASIII , will it help me to pull my temp down 5 degree ? If yes , I'll do it . And how about a good HSF

If you can afford it I'd get an Alpha or something before you start to put it together. With the stock cooler my temps got up to around 56C running Prime95. With a Thermaltake Dragon478(with a really annoying high-pitched sound) I got down to around 49C. Now it looks like I'll be pulling the motherboard and everything out to put an Alpha 8942 on it, since the Dragon478 annoys me. I wish I'd just got the Alpha to begin with.

If you have the money, then it is highly recommended. You can get a pretty good overclock with the stock heatsink, but it never hurts to keep it cooler. Go with a Alpha though, the volcanos suck IMO.
