Will a DVI LCD connection improve visual quality?

Hello all, I own an LG Flatron L1920P. I find the quality to be ok, nothing like my CRT of course. And the visual quality in general is pretty crappy. I am using the standard ole monitor connection- not a DVI, I have to use an adaptor to plug my LCD into my x1900xtx. Will a DVI cord give me a big graphical improvement?

They are "DVI" connectors and yes you might see an improvement.

Before buying a cable (if the monitor didn't come with one) you might check that
1. your desktop is running at the native resolution of the LCD (probably 1280x1024 but read the friendly manual to check).
2. your refresh rate is 60 - 70 Hz not higher.

Yeah my refresh rate is 75hz, and the problem is most games don't run at the native resolution- they run at like 1280X960.... Except HL2, but fear doesn't

Realistically the colors will be more vivid and points with my sharper. But, there are cases where colors are seem more vivid on vga than dvi. I noticed on my 2001fps that whites tend to be brigther on vga than dvi at the same settings.

Go with what DaveSimmons says. Check to make sure your resolution is set at the native resolution of the monitor (probably 1280 x 1024) and turn your refresh rate down to 60 to 70 hz.

I am not sure what games you are playing, but that games I play all have 1280 x 1024 resolution as an option. COD2 is one of the more current games that I play.

Play around with your refresh rates. It has been my experience that the higher refresh rates (above 70 hz) tends to make things look fuzzy. I run my 19" Samsung at 60 hz.

and by the way there is a way to make Fear run at 1280x1024.. but you have to do it yourself.. here's how :

Go to C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR

On the settings.cfg file copy and paste this in, or just type it in yourself, ofcourse make a backup copy on the original file incase something goes wrong.

make sure you go in the All Users folder and not the Administrator or whatever you called yourself.. for some dumb reason Fear always puts the options and save files in the 'all users' folder.. which also means if you're reformatting and are used to only making a backup of your "admin" folder then you'll lose your save games.. but now you won't caz you read this ;p


P.S. Anytime you even enter the graphics options menu once in-game.. the resolution will be reset to 640x480. So.. make sure you set the options first, then edit the cfg file to force the native res.. then don't go back in the graphics menu or you'll have to repeat these steps

Get drivers for the LCD? Try pushing the auto-adjust button on ur LCD if the text is blurry/crappy.

Also, try turning on ClearType. It's designed to improve text quality on LCDs.

Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts: ClearType

Also, FWIW my Samsung 910t looked noticably better on DVI than VGA. Since then, I've stuck with DVI.

Finally, I strongly recommend MonoPrice for cables of any sort. I've bought DVI cables from them in the past, works great. Cheap and quick shipping, too!

It depends on the internal D/A coverter. Generally, there will be improvement with the use of DVI.
