One of my friends was considering getting a IWill KK266. He asked me the above question and I was stumped. Any of you know the answer to this?

the slot that ram slides into is different for ddr and sdr(pc133)

ddr has 184 pins
sdr has 168 pins

but... some boards have slots for both ddr and srd ram, most ddr chipsets support sdr, its just a matter of the board maker to include it.

for example the asus a7a266 has 2ddr slots and 3sdr slots

just go DDR all the way...why use SDRAM when you could get a 256 stick for like 50 someodd dollars. Epox 8k7a is a good DDR board...you can OC well with it too.

Nope, most motherboards are jsut going full DDR now, but like Boonesmi said, the Asus A7A does support both, but it has the Ali chip, which is no where near the Amd760 speed, but for some reason the Sandra scores are decent, hmm...anyway stay away from Ali, and if you go DDR look next month for the new revisions of the KT266 chip should be interesting, otherwise, look into the Amd760, and for Sdram, make sure it is a KT133A motherboard, like the KK266.

There are boards that run bothe DDR as wel SDR memory, and using different slots, they are not tsable enough for me though (toms hardware crashtests : 4 crashes in 24 hrs stresstest using SDR and 3 using DDR)
a descent number for the crashtest is 2 times, but the stable ones do not crash ... (the asus dont crash :D)

that's a pretty broad question. like some of the guys said, there are mobos like the a7a266 that do, but they forgot to mention that there are seperate slots for SDRAM and DDR. DDR ram will NOT physically fit in an SDRAM slot, and vice versa...the pinouts are different.

Nothing wrong with the performance of the A7A266...although it may not be as fast as the DDR only A7M266, I have never had any stability or performance problems with mine.
