Will a cordless phone from USA work in Canada?

So will a cordless home phone bought from the US work in Canada? I was told that cordless phones will not work if the frequency used in the other country is different or banned?

Yes but only 94.6342% of the time. But, that percentage will vary on a daily basis.

This should take care of the other ~5%

I don't think they have the same spectrum of radiation up there, it's like 42 degrees out of phase or something. Be careful that you don't get sucked into a parallel universe, k?

OP, don't listen to these jerks. Your phone will work just fine in Canada.

However, that might be your biggest problem. Allow me to explain.

Most cordless phones manufactured nowadays use encryption algorithms to encrypt your telephone conversation between the phone and the cordless receiver-- this is to prevent anyone with a radio scanner from listening in on your phone conversation.

However, the US Government has imposed strict limitations on the export of products which implement advanced encryption methods--I suppose the government fears you must be a terrorist if you have something you want to hide (encrypt). The US actually classifies encryption methods as "munitions", and treats their export just like the export of any other munition (say, a high-powered rocket launcher).

This may sound like a joke, but the FBI and the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) have a joint enforcement effort called "Operation Can You Hear Me Now?", where they use special radio scanning technology (similiar to that used by the FCC to find pirate radio stations) to locate devices which emit encrypted voice or data signals. If caught with such a device, you can be extradited and charged with the unlawful export of munitions, a crime punishable by up to 25 years in prison per offence.

My advice, if you still choose to ignore the law and move the phone across the border, is to use the phone as sparingly as possible to minimize your risk of being caught.

You do mean cordless, not cell phone, right? Either way, the answer is yes - same phone systems used in both countries. There COULD be confusion in cell phones because there are three different bands used in N. America, but that's the same in both countries. That's why there are "Tri-Mode" cell phones.

This has got to be the funniest damn post that I've read in a long time. The OP obviously does not know anything about cordless phones and then QED jumps in this his "... don't listen to these jerks ..." comment. This is totally priceless

Yes, dude, OP your phone will work. Unless you actually mean a cell phone, in which case then it might not.

You will just need a voltage adapter and it should work fine.

for what?

to increase the voltage to take advantage of the phone's internal resistance so they don't sound like panzies
