Will a computer run outside of a case?

As long as you put your stuff on a non-static surface yes...

The cardboard trick is good :D.

anti-static bags are conductive, not insulators. Put it on cardboard.

EDIT: Machines run just fine out of the case. My crack rack ran out of cases sitting on shelves in the garage for months. :D

Take it off the antistatic bag. Put it on top of a piece of wood or cardboard box.

How are you powering up? If you short the PWR-ON jumpers for a moment, it will work. If you leave them shorted (like with a jumper), you will boot up and then power right back off.

I typically start my board (outside of the case) with a screwdriver or paperclip.

I have a switch from an old case i took out and plugged in.

Yes, The cpu is in. It's a c2d e6300 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. The case isn't being delivered until Friday. I'm going to leave this alone until then.

Whats the chances of the mobo being bad?

Yeah I had the 4pin connector in. That wire also has a 8pin connector before the 4pin. I looked it up and It's for a motherboard that supports dual cpus. It's a Antec SmartPower 2.0 500 watt powersupply.

The ram is: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

All that stuff should be compatible correct?

Put one stick of RAM in slot three and try and boot. If that works, go into the BIOS and change the VDIMM to +0.3V.

Lol, this reminds me of a few summers ago when I got a new case. My old one was a generic POS and the buttons had broken off, and I think I took everything out to cut holes in it or something, but anyway I had the mobo and everything sitting in a big Rubbermaid box with the PSU and drives sitting on top of a smaller Rubbermaid box. I used the wires from the buttons from the case to turn on/reset the thing; I had to touch the ends together so every time I did that I felt like I was hotwiring my computer. I ran it like this for like 2 or 3 months, no problems.

It worked great. Thanks.

The case came 1 day early so I got everything installed and running great. I ran into 1 other problem. The video card I bought doesnt output the bios screen over the vga port. I had to use DVI. I had it plugged into the vga port on my 2005fpw and was still getting nothing. Switched to DVI and it worked. The only problem is the kid I build it for only has a vga plug on his monitor. I'm hoping once it gets to windows the vga will start working.

I have to say, I love core 2 duo. This is the first system I'v done with one. It's sad to see a 1.8ghz chip running faster than my 3.0 northwood. :(

I can't wait to build one of my own. I'll do a little more research on the ram compatibility next time.

No, they are not. Just use an Ohm meter and measure the resistance.
