Will a AMD XP system blow my ears off?

When I build my system (sometime in the future) it has to be reasonably quiet. I get worried when I read about AMD rigs needing lots of cooling. I want to go the AMD XP route but will such a system make my ears fall off in pain?
Can I build a AMD XP system just as quiet as my current Celeron 500 system?
Do I have to go the P4 route?

😕

if you arent planning on overclocking, i dont see why it cant be a quiet system.. get something like an alpha pal8045 with a 80mm panaflo l1a.

No no, lol. The stock fan is 32dBa which is really acceptable. If you want something uber quiet, get an AX7 (they perform better than the Alpha 8045) and slap on the Zalman 20dBa/28cfm fan.

Doesn't this belong in the Cases & Cooling Forum?

My Epox 8KHA and XP-1600+ registered high 50's for CPU temps with the retail HSF.

I got a 7000 RPM loud mo-fo HSF and I'm down to the mid-40s. Did I need the swap? No. I was just being a geek. 50's are ok. You should be ok with the retail HSF if you are not overclocking or have 5 video cards in a tight case.

i've got a 5000 rpm 80 mm delta on my swiftech. its loud, yes, but its not unbearable as its a lower frequency than the 7000 rpm screamer fan. plus i'm used to a fan since i've got a 20" oscillating one running much of the time.

AX7 with fan is $34 + shipping/sales tax from 2cooltek.. don't think that's really necessary if he's not overclocking. the svc gc68 with panaflo l1a is $9 + shipping/tax from SVC Compucycle. they're sold elsewhere though so it might be cheaper elsewhere.

frustrated: what kind of cooling is in your celeron 500?

I have an 1800xp with retail fan/hs. Works fine, system stable at 104-114F. No unexplained crashes. Not noticeably louder than my old Athlon 750.

If you're not going to OC, the retail HSF is fine on an AthlonXP. Of course it's not the greatest, but it gets the job done. Make sure that you include at least one intake and one exhaust fan in your case, in addition to the power supply fan. They don't need to be loud ones, a cheap, quiet Panaflo L1A will suffice. I also recommend some type of cooling on your HDDs, but you'd need that regardless of whether you bought AMD or Intel.
Most of the ultra-cooling freaks are just users who shouldn't even be allowed to know their CPU temps.
Example: an average conversation on, let's say, the H forum.
Poster: "OMG, my full load temps are 60C!!!!!!! OMG, my cpu is too hot!!!!!!"
Me: "Is it stable?"
Poster: "Yes."
Me: "Then what's the problem?"

Another example: a friend of mine (against my advice) bought an Athlon Tbird 1100B setup from Gateway. It has no intake fan, no exhaust fan, the power supply blows hot air into the case, and a meager little HSF (all of this is against AMD spec). The system is very quiet, and although the HSF will (literally) burn your fingers if you touch it, it has been completely rock solid stable for the 18 months he has owned it and has never had a failure of any kind.
My point? A lot of the AMD people who scream about cooling are either looking for bragging rights, or worried about nothing, you decide.

Now if you're OC'ing (like I do), then it's a whole different story, but with an Alpha8045 HSF (or similar) and a bunch of Panaflo L1A's, you can still have performance and a quiet system.

I was actually OT in OT, LOL!!!

LMAO 😀

FrustratedUser, I recently got the XP 1800+ retail CPU and can say that the retail setup does cool the CPU sufficient but IMHO, it's a bit loud. Take into account though, that I replaced my PS fan w/ an 80mm Panaflo and I have an intake and exhaust fans of the 80mm variety that are also Panaflos, so this may account for me feeling the retail CPU fan is loud.

Thanks, but I don't want to void the warranty on a new PS to replace a fan. It's just wrong.
So far I learned that I need at least 1 (or 2) big case fans. All put together it means:

1 fan for CPU
1 fan in PSU
1 fan on Video card
1 or 2 case fans.
1 extra fan for cooling HD (???)

Hmm, this means 4 or 5 fans in a new rig ---> 3 times as many as I have now.
Anything louder than now is bad because it's up 24/7.

DOH!

I can only comment on my 1Ghz Duron not an XP system.

I'm running with a Panaflo on my hacked Dr Thermal V77L HSF

And a Panflo in my hacked Antec 300 W PSU

That's it

And I still think it is too loud.

It roars compared to my lil dell based intel system setting right next to it.

OK roars is perhaps an exagerations but it sits right next to me in the family room and I'm trying to watch T.V. OK?

If I had to do it again I'd just spend $500/600 on another Dell.

Good luck!

Lol

Just do what I do. 2 sunon's cooling my hdd's and 2 exhaust. OR try putting the retail xp1800 fan on an old 1ghz athlon! no, wait. freezups and restarts. it's a whole lot quieter than a colvano 6cu, though!

I just got this case from newegg.com

With only retail heatsink on an athlon 1600, my cpu is currently 49 C and it's pretty quiet.

I'm running a 1600+ @ 1575 with an 8045 and Panaflo L1a and temps never get over 50. Nice and quiet/stable.

Which panaflo??? Also, let us know the complete specs of both setups. . A $600 *ell surely has integrated video or an ATi Rage 16 MB, so you don't have a video card fan (~30 dBa)

You never stated which XP you were going to use. Heat begins to become a problem when using faster CPUs. The new XP T-bred runs cooler providing you use a 1900 or lower. The 1700 - 1900 use 60 - 63 watts under full load. If you use one of these and replace the fan on retail HS; you can get reasonable temperatures and reasonable noise. There is a choice; cool ot quiet. Most of us settle for a compromise between the two. Or step up to the PAL 8045 and get better temps and noise factors. Try the retail HS; it is not bad with another fan. Panaflos are usually recomended.

You can go extreme and build an adaptor to use a 92mm fan and the 103 CFM Panaflo. I did this and used a rheostat to slow down fan. System is very quiet and temps are 39 C @ idle and 44C under heavy load with a XP2000+ (palamino) @ 1.7 gig.

Seems like there may still be a bit of doubt...

I'm running an AthlonXP1900+ with retail HSF just fine, I keep it at full load and temp doesn't spike up...as long as your case is well ventilated. It runs around 58-61C dependent on room temp (70-78F)... mind you this is after I UPS'd it across the country without reapplying my AS3, I'll do that when I get back in a few weeks. BTW: AMD max spec for this line of CPUs is 90C, plenty of room. temps are more steady than my PIII 1GHz with Alpha PEP66 setup (which is weird) though slightly hotter (but at this mhz/speed improvement, it's no surprise)

case/fan setup:
Antec True430W PSU (with the internal fan too), 5 80mm sunon "quiet" (/shrug, labelled as such, and not too loud) case fans. You probably don't need this much of a setup (2 are bottom front intake, intake right over cpu, exhaust at rear middle and top of case) to be just fine. btw I've also got a GF4 Ti4400 in here. full system specs in sig
