Will a 8800 gt + q6600 be enough for Crysis?

I'm wondering if that gigabyte 8800 512 gt with the nice after market-looking cooler used with a e8400 or q6600 overclocked would yield a nice image at 1900x1200. That's a kinda full sentence, maybe I'll reiterate

@1900x1200 Crysis
-8800 512mb gt (overclocked)
-q6600 (overclocked) or e8400 (overclocked)
-some kind of good fast 2 gbs of ram

I know this has been brought up 1000 times but I'm having one of those days where I check prices and charts like 100 times to try to get an idea of whether now is a good time to buy. I'm thinking that this month or coming weeks will be big for video cards and cpus. Do you guys think the 9800 gtx will allow for price drops on the 8800 gt or gtx?
 
If you are fine with bumping down the resolution OR the settings to medium then yeah you'll be great (no AA though). To reiterate you can either choose:

A. Crysis high settings, no AA, 1680x1050
B. Crysis medium setting (sound and physics on high), 1900x1200

To be honest, Crysis at medium still looks better than any other game out there (it should really be called High and High, Very High) but I would still go for 1680x1050 and High because the jump in graphics is pretty significant.

You could also go with a mixture of the two like mixing up settings some on high some on medium and don't compromise as much on the resolution. The 9800GTX has already originated huge price drop on the 8800GT and GTS, there are rebates on EVERY single card on NewEgg and they are all under $200AR (some even without AR) so yeah, this is as cheap as they will get and they are a pretty good buy considering the 9 series are pretty much it with a different name.
 
honestly no card out there is going to run Crysis @ 1900x1200 all high quality. I have a 9600gt at stock and it can run Crysis all medium @ 1900x1200 all medium with pretty stable framerates 25-30fps (dx9), the 8800gt is a little more powerful than my card so you should be good with that setup if you don't mind playing at medium. 1280*800 all high settings, some very high settings works a charm on the 9600gt, framerates from 35fps - 45fps (again dx9 mode).
 
not a real significant one, i think you'll have to look into sli & two 8800gts if you want to come close to playable high quality @ 1900x1200 (or look into a 9800gx2). I personally think that this would be a waste of money though. nvidia g200 and ati r700 are literally just around the corner (Q4 '08) so i wouldn't consider dropping more than $200 on a card or face buyers remorse when you see benches on those later in the year.

I play on a native 1080p tv (living room) and 24" 1920X1200 monitor (office) and really IMO 1280*800 looks fine for now (or at least that's what I keep telling myself).

No, ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Ive been fortunate enough to run Crysis on three different 512mb 8800GT cards and two different 512mb 8800GTS cards.

Neither card can run Crysis at acceptable framerates @ 1920x1200 even if you overclock the card and your cpu.

These guys are right, you're better off starting at 1680x1050 and deciding what features you can live with lowering a bit to get smooth gameplay all the way through the game. (the later levels tax your hardware WAY more than the Flyby benchmark Crysis comes with)






 
I finished Crysis in a lan with :
X1650pro
2GB of ram
E6400 @ 2.9Ghz

on low setting @ 1680x1050

Its looked great and i had the same experience like all my buddies :! they hated the end :!

I've also played it on low at the end, because it was stuttering like hell, and it didn't look great at all.
 
im playing Crysis @ 1680x1050 all settings high, Nvidia set to high quality on-

Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz
9600GT @ 700 1750 1000
2Gig @ 800Mhz

with an avg fps of 25-30 which is completly smooth and playable.

Hope this gives you some indication as the 8800GT is slightly faster.

Wait and see what the 9800GT/GTX will be like.

EDIT: do you know what mate i just completed Crysis 2mins ago and its the biggest pile of shite ive ever played. After this flop Crytek should stop making games simple as that, i even bought the game cos i thought the multiplay might be ok but thats steaming aswell.


 
Yeah I can run crysis with my 8800 GT at 1680x1050 with high settings except for shaders and shadows, I have to set those to med, but this is also with no AA or AF....the game runs silk smooth at those settings...if I add AA and AF then I have to set everything to med...
 
I get 38.54 @1680x1050 on gpu benchmark with a q6600@3.2 and 8800gt@800/1950/2000 everything on high with no mods. 1920 all high you would need a GX2/SLI to be playable.
 
I played Crysis with only 29fps on a overclocked 8600gts with a core 2 duo @ 1440x900 all medium settings. Some slowness at the deck but finished the game without a problem.

I had to join to post this but so many of these replies are WRONG it just really bothered me.

An 8800GT and Q6600, even if they are both at stock speed, CAN AND WILL run Crysis at 1920x1200 completely fine as long as you tweak a couple settings. Most of the performance drop when using higher settings comes from a few obscure variables that you can safely reset to lower values without effecting the image quality in a noticable way. Unfortunately I have Crysis on my dads computer (which is Q6600/8800GT/1920x1200/Vista 64 Ultimate) and not this one so I can't pull up the specific settings I changed but there are PLENTY of tweak guides (such as http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_1.html or http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=11614) that explain with great detail what you can change and what effect it will have. There are some pretty simple ways to make it look really good though.

1: Using a 64bit OS run the 64bit launcher for the game. The performance increase is significant over running the 32bit launcher or playing on a 32bit OS.
2: Force DX9 mode if in Vista. This is a huge increase in performance and you can re-enable most of the disabled "very high" settings for virtually identical image quality without the performance hit.
3: It is ABSOLUTELY VITAL vital to change the texture LOD settings for the terrain as well as the parallax occlusion settings. These changes will increase the visual quality of your game to far beyond what very high will give you, and for about 2fps drop at that. Scroll to the texture and LOD section in the 2nd link above to see some comparison shots. Once you use these changes you will never be able to play the game without them.
4: I recommend using the Natural Mod and also the FFT water algorithm mod/change (google these). The Natural Mod changes some lighting effects to give the game a more realistic look and the water mod uses the FFT algorithm to give Crysis very realistic waves.

Combine these changes with a few other tweaks from the above guides or any of the other guides and you will be playing Crysis at 1920x1200 using high/very high settings. I know this for a fact because that's how I played it. An 8800GTS 512MB would perform a little better or allow a few extra shader operations but one of the main limitations is that 512mb ram at this resolution won't allow you to max out the texture resolution. You can still get it pretty high though and in combination with all the tweaks you will end up with good performance and an image quality that is SUPERIOR to the default very high settings.

 
generally for me, the shader quality, shadow detail, physics, and the post processing/motion blur have the biggest performance hits. you can try most of the settings at medium and a couple at low except for the shader quality @ high which IMO makes the biggest visual impact compared to the other settings. the last level with the alien ship ran really crappy on my system though, i had to turn the shaders down to med, and bumped the res down to 1440x900 too.
 
I have a very good set of graphics settings that look good (IMO) and give high FPS on crysis and the 8800GT. However, I would not recommend running at 1900x1200.

Suck it up and only use 1680x1050 res.

Same experience regarding performance, tho I dropped everything to medium at certain points due to excessive stuttering, then back to high after those points.

I loved all of Crysis right up to where you go inside the mountain/alienship, and the whole battleship sequence could've been left out. But the wide open jungle world maps that make up the first 80% of the game are just what I was looking for, Far Cry 2esque.

E8400 @ 3.6 Ghz
4 GB Ram
8800GT 512

Runs Crysis with all settings at Very High, no AA, and 1680x1050 at about 15 FPS for me.

You could buy 4,000 and 4,000 SLi them and you won't see a huge difference. Crysis is a beast! All joking aside, no. You won't see much of a difference. The 8800GT is a solid card.

I hated it all and found myself running away from soldiers instead of fighting them

because it took half a clip to kill 1 person, half the time all i did was stick to riverbanks

and sprint because i couldnt be arsed, the only reason i completed it was because i was

convinced that this couldnt be it surely and was expecting it to get better and it never did, infact it just went downhill from the beginning.

Crytek should be embarrassed releasing Crysis.


 
i feel like crytek should focus on making engines, there was a lot of potential and it was kind of disappointing to see it mostly unrealized. in my mind it's worse to play a mediocre game with a lot of unrealized potential (crysis) than a bad one that succeeds at what it's trying to do (resistance: fall of man).
