Will a 6800GT work for me?

I'm interested in getting a 6800GT until I can afford to upgrade my entire system. My question is, will the 6800GT do anything for me, or is my system too pitiful? I have:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1GB Crucial PC2700 DDR SDRAM
ABit KV7 MB
ATI 9700 Pro

Will I get a wicked boost with the 6800GT until I can upgrade the system (and then move the new card to the new system), or is my CPU too lame to get much out of it?

Thanks.

It will probably be slowed down by the CPU...That vid card is even with high-end cpu's

Since you have PC2700, you might want to consider a 2800+(or 3000+) to go with it, if you don't have the $$$ to upgrade the system all the way

Your 9700 Pro isn't holding you back much. If I were you I'd invest in a good Socket 754 CPU/motherboard combo right now with some good RAM and wait for the prices of the 6800 and x800 series to come down around Christmas time when the PCI Express refresh of them is in full swing and not as many people want the AGP versions.

Great guys, thanks for the input.

My MB multipliers don't go beyond my current CPU...so I guess I'll go for a Athlon64 3200+, a new MB, and some nice fast RAM. I can limp along with the 9700 Pro until prices come down.

Thanks again!

i think u have made a good choice there.....my mate has a A64 3200 and some nice Corsair ram.....his 9700pro seems to have no probs playin games like UT at holy sh1t settings and at a respectable res of 1280x1024 keep the 9700pro a little longer and you reget it

You will get much more of a performance boost right now by spending 300-350 dollars on a new A64/Mobo combo like Jeff said.

You'll hardly be limping with a 9700 Pro. It's a great card... has been ever since it was released. Sure there are better ones out there... but you don't really need anything more powerful until you get Half Life 2 or Doom 3. Far Cry might be a little sluggish with a 9700 Pro... but just cut back some of the settings until it runs at a satisfactory rate. Even with everything at Medium details it's still a very nice looking game.

Sure, I agree, and I love my 9700 Pro. But with the rumors of Doom3 releasing August 3rd, I want to be prepared. :)

As I said, a new MB/CPU/RAM is clearly the way to go, and may open up the 9700 a little more as well. That should get me through the launch of Doom3, and then in October or so I can get a new vid card when prices come down.

When I had my 9800 and upgraded from a 2500 Barton to a 3000 A64, most of benchmarks improved by 50-100%.

no longer rumors, D3 went gold. but the 9700 pro should still do fine. min requirements are a gf4mx, and your card is wayy better than that

Well we all know what minimum means... but just in case you don't... the minimum requirements are the absolute minimum need to even run the game at all. Anything less than that and the game will probably just refuse to run. You'll probably have to run 800x600 resolution and turn off shadows to even get 15 frames per second with a GeForce4 MX. Plus you won't get any SM2.0 effects... probably not any SM1.4 effects either... or is the GF4MX capable of SM1.4? Either way, the game will look like piss on a GeForce4 MX.
