will a 5400rpm 16mb cache laptop hard drive noticeably increase performance?

yea, of course...probably a good difference actually.

except for on your battery 😉

My battery life remained pretty much constant (maybe lost 5-10 minutes, nothing to worry about) when I upgraded

hmm, usually its more than that, at least thats what ive heard... thats good news then 🙂

how about on an older system?

the 16mb of cache won;t help since I have a bx based laptop. U33 at best.

I know the newness of it would make it faster htan an old drive.

but is it worth getting over a regular notebook drive?

The speed improvement is largely due to seek times. In general it can find what it needs faster than a 4200RPM drive

I have a p4 m 2.0 processor so it should work with my laptop right?

Thats a modern laptop, so it *should* work. However, you should check in your laptops manual to make sure it doesn't need some funky type of drive or somthing 🙂 Most 99% of laptops use 1.8" drives, so it shouldn't be a problem

I thought most mobile hard drives were 2.5" ?

Yes it does. Just get the IBM/Hitachi drive. The Tosh isn't faster, and isn't it the one that can make clicking noises.

If you want the ultimate in fast, take a look at the new Hitachi Global Storage Technologies 7K60. 60GB, 7200RPM spindle speed. According to this, it's the fastest notebook drive available. And before anyone points out a battery-life hit, it has power-parity with the 60GB 5400RPM drive.

In case anyone is wondering, the HGST is the result of a merge between Hitachi's and IBM's storage divisions, which is why there are no more Travelstars and Desk(Death?)stars.

Any word on 5K80 availability, performance, street price, etc.?

I would take the IBM/Hitachi over the Tosh, but that's just me. 🙂

Here is one review, and here is another.
Another and another

I would gladly loose some (very little) performance to get a (more) quiet drive.

I think it was on the Dell forums I read about the clicking noise on the Tosh. Whether or not is has been fixed yet I don't know. If I was buying today I would take the 80gb 4200rpm IBM/Hitachi, it's fast and quiet, but a bit expensive.

Edit: A thing to notice when upgrading laptop drives is the height of the drive, especially on older laptops.
