Will a 333Mhz FSB CPU run on a board that supposedly only supports up to 266Mhz FSB?

Here's the deal. I have a rev. 1.01 Asus A7V333 motherboard. I have been running an Athlon XP 1900+ in it and am replacing the processor. The revision of motherboard I have only supports 266Mhz FSB Athlons. I thought I ordered a 266Mhz Athlon XP+ 2500, but when it got here today, it was a 333Mhz FSB Athlon. In my haste to get the processor ordered, I apparently clicked on the wrong line and ordered the wrong CPU! Aaarrgh. My first thought is to send it back....however, before I do that, I wanted to find out what would happen if I ran it at a slower FSB. So, that's my question...can anyone answer it for me.

what week is the chip. if its before wk 40 its unlocked and you can run it at a lower FSB with a higher multiplier. Jus too let you know though thier are no 266fsb 2500 just 333. I think 2400 & 2600 are avail in 266 though

I don't know what week the chip is...it's still in the box.

Since I made my post, I have done a little research on the amdmb.com board. It seems that there are a lot of people running the Barton core on the A7V333 Rev. 1.01 motherboards, so I am thinking that I will try it. I guess if it doesn't work, I'll buy a new motherboard.

It should work. As long as you can change the FSB, it should be backwards compatible downward, at least from my experience.

I run a mobile Barton 2500 in my KR7A-133 (KT266a). It is a 266 Mhz, unlocked CPU, that runs crazy fast and COOL.

I used to run a Barton 333 at high FSB speeds just fine.

Yeah I think it won't run at the 333 Mhz speed but if you lower the fsb to 266 Mhz (or 133 x 2 in the bios), your motherboard should detect it as such and run ok.

Heh heh heh...sorry about that....please append FSB after the clock speeds in the title.

My bad.

I think I'm gonna try the switch tonight.

It should work...my KT-7 only supported 100 (200) FSB, but my 1.3 Thunderbird was a 133 (266) and it worked without any problems (save for the performance that you lose, but oh well).

OK.....I finally got the 2500 Barton CPU installed on my revision 1.01 A7V333 mobo. It is running at 166/33 and correctly shows up as an Athlon XP 2500+. My only problem (and this could be a biggee), is this:

The first time I turned the computer on with the new processor, Windows booted up just fine, then the mouse and keyboard stopped working. I rebooted and was able to go into Safe Mode. On normal boot, Windows hangs at the title screen. It doesn't seem like it is locked up as the bar keeps going across the middle of the screen. I am thinking that it is a driver issue (I did take out my modem, and put in a new 7in1 Mitsumi floppy drive...but it was recognized and shows up correctly in hardware).

Any ideas on what I should try next would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Try to force an update of the ESCD on your next reboot, or just clear the CMOS. You likely have the system confused about what happened. It has changed configuration, and nobody told it what to do. I had the same problem when I removed my soundcard. It froze on the last segment of bootup, though ran fine in safe mode. Once I sorted out the issues, all was fine.

did the ESCD and the system was able to boot into Windows XP. However, the mouse goes from locking up to working. I'm gonna runa memory test just to see if it there are any problems there. I probably should do a complete reinstall of WIndows, but I don't want to do it ... Arrgh.

Try to uninstall (via the Hardware manager) both the keyboard and the mouse, and reboot. The system will reinstall them into a better location, IRQ wise. If this is a USB setup, and you do not have an IRQ for the USB, you should enable one in the BIOS. It can make a huge difference in stability.

Thanks. I'll try that when I get home tonight. My keyboard and mouse are not on the USB, so I hope this works. My home computer has been down for 3 weeks now...

I have the exact same setup. Make sure to use the 1016 BIOS, as most people (including myself) have found it to be the most stable.

D@mn...what a busy week. Tonight is the first night I have had an opportunity to sit down at the computer and try to troubleshoot my problems.

I tried removing the keyboard and mouse and rebooting.....Got a BSOD and this message:

=================================================
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove and newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

I can restart the computer in safe mode and it runs without crashing. As soon as I reboot and go into windows normally, I get to the login screen, can login, then when I try to use the mouse to open up a program, it will move around the screen but clicking on icons does nothing. Same with keyboard..nothing works. If the computers sets like this for a minute, I get the same BSOD.

the fasttrak.sys driver is the driver for the onboard raid controller....the newest version is installed.

Any suggestions would be helpful, as the computer has been inoperable since Feb. 10.

-Brian

BTW, TheFRO, what are your BIOS settings set at.
