will 6870 crossfire be limited by core i7-860 at stock 2.8ghz?

A stock i7 860 will turbo to 2.93 GHz at a minimum. Even if you were 100% CPU bottlenecked (which you won’t be), 3.2 GHz is at best a ~9% performance gain.

Perhaps this is true, but often affecting minimum frames first, 9% minimum frames can often make a good impact on a game, ie min from 55 to 60. Of course I point out the optimal situation for it 😀

As everyone is saying though, there is no reason to get two of those with that monitor. Buy one and upgrade to a nice monitor with the remaining cash.

Yes it will, look at your own link. The i7 at stock speeds even bottlenecks the 5870cf and 6870cf is actually even more powerful due to better scaling.
I think you need to look at the link again...

The only game showing a clear CPU bottleneck is X3: Terran Conflict.

There is no practical difference in the following games. Heck some games show zero difference:
et:qw
cod4
batman
left 4 dead
coj
crysis
far cry 2
serious sam hd
just cause 2
lost planet
hawx
call of pripyat
aliens vs. predator
dirt 2
battleforge

Fear, UT3, and RE5 show minor differences, but these games get well above 60 fps. And I would bet if you paired a faster graphics options with the stock i7 the framerates would be more than dual 5870s.

In WiC there is no difference between a 3.2 and 3.6 GHz i7. Considering his processor will turbo up to these speeds, there isn't much of a concern here either.

Also dual 6870s are not faster than 5870s. They are at best the same.

guys sorry to replay late....n thanks for the great responses....i'll b gaming on sony bravia 32" ...n would like to do so on either 1680 x 1050 or 1920 x 1080 resolutions

n guys if i want to do the mild overclcking like upto 3.3 ghz then how do i do it? i mean i'm quite noob, if not totally, in this matter n don't know much....i mean what setting do i've to enable or disable in BIOS n then i just wanna use the oc softwares provided by asus to do so....i mean i ain't an enthusiast or anything but seeing ur replies i think it might benefit me a little to just mild oc upto like 3.2 ghz or if possible 3.3 ghz..... so how do i do it please reply?

n it'd be really great if someone can just tell me just in a few orderly steps to achieve 3.3 ghz using the asus oc utilities ...or even if thru bios then please in an orderly manner....

why would you ever go below 1920x1080 with 6870 crossfire? also 1600x900 would be the proper res to use below 1920x1080 since they are both 16:9.

at eyefinity resolutions it only gets worse for 5870cf
6870cf beats the 5870cf at 5760x1080 in every game test, only losing in the Heaven benchmark.

I stand by my statement that two 6870s are actually more powerful than two 5870s due to scaling.

For all practical purposes they are the same, even though I could point, with verocity proclaiming I'm right, the 5870CF is faster in more tests it isn't. But then we're arguing over 2 fps? Meh, who cares. I'm sure there are cases where the 6870 provides a significant advantage, just as I'm sure there are cases the 5870 does. In the end I still stand by my statement, and the CPU (MONITOR, LoL) bottleneck in question isn't a concern now that we know he's gaming at 1080p.

so i guess 6870 cfx is a go for me.......... thanks a lot guys for your advices....i was in a real doubtful situation...... i mean i'm getting a hold of all the technical part there is to all high end computing but a little slow...:\:sneaky:......i'll still try to mild oc my processor if possible

n if u guys got time then can you take a look at this thread also started by me n please tell me if everything's ok.... i'll b really grateful..........
