I had ATT uverse service which used a 2Wire modem which I understand is DSL. They used coax to the house for Internet & cable. I changed cable companies to WOW. I need wireless for my daughter's laptops. Trendnet modems I used before didn't have much range. The 2Wire seemed to work well for the wireless. I thought of buying a cheap used one on EBay. Does the 2Wire only work with ATT service? Is there something better for a modest price?

You need a cable modem for cable service. You can't use a DSL modem since the connections and communication methods are completely different. If the modem provided by your cable company is not a combination modem/wireless router, then you want to get a regular wireless router and use it along with the modem.

You need to check the model of the 2wire. The 2700 is ADSL only, but a 2701 does both ethernet and ADSL. Chances are some of the other devices have the same choice.

More and more ADSL router have the option of being used as an Ethernet router now.

Extra information. I'll be using the modem from cable company which isn't wireless. Can I connect a 2Wire 3800HGV-b which has ethernet ports and use it for wireless connections? So, I plan to connect it to a Netgear router and the router is connected to cable modem. Will it work thru my cable modem to allow internet access?

The 3800HGV is a mighty big device and you would only be using it as a dumb wireless access point. Yes - if configured with wireless on, anything that is plugged into one of the four ethernet ports will be available via wireless. You don't need the WAN connection active, nor the TV hooked up, nor any phones connected to use it this way. Its a pretty crappy access point, but it'll do in a pinch.
