Will 2100 ddr RAM default to 1600 ddr if mobo only supports such?

I guess this is a theoritical question, because no motherboards only support 1600, they all support 2100 too. If your cpu doesn't support the 133 bus, only 100, then yes, it might deafult to 1600. Some boards will allow for asynch bus operations though, usually VIA chipsets.

This Q. was actually for a friend but, correct me if I'm wrong, I thought the 2100 ddr was "equivalent",
for lack of a better term, to the 133 mhz fsb and the 1600 ddr to the 100 mhz fsb. Some ( I thought all) 133/100 boards,
and correct me if I'm wrong again but, I was told the ram on these boards defaulted to the max. front side bus speed allowed
by the board? Are the newer DDR board different then the 133/100 boards?

Thanks J. I realize what his point was. My point was about his statement that : "no motherboards only support 1600, they all support 2100 too". I realize that some boards may support 2100 but surely not all, no?

Its not only the board, if the cpu still runs at 100/200fsb then in a lot of cases the ram will run at the same thing. And yes all 2100 ram should run fine at 1600.

the only chipsets that support DDR are Ali Magik, 760, KT266 and A, SiS. They were all made long after 133 bus came out, so they all support both.

Any board will, because its just a matter of FSB speed being 100/133....
